Howdy

My brother and I are looking to head out to NY next summer or fall and do the Erie Canal trail. We were thinking the fall would be best because of the colors. But we noticed they have a sponsored ride in July that looks like it may be fun.
I guess what I am looking for is what do you locals think? My recollection is July can be pretty hot and muggy, and the fall can be cooler. If we decide to do our own is the good accommodations along the route? Either camping or in expensive hotels/Hostels?

Thanks for any tips you may have

David

I've done the stretch from Buffalo to Macedon recently - riding solo. July can be pretty muggy, the colors in the fall are awesome. There are some B&Bs in this stretch (Adam's Basin, Medina?) and hotels pretty close (Pittsford). Not sure about camping as I'm a local. I'm hoping to get farther east on the canal next summer.

Hope this is some help!

There are several state parks along the route (cayuga lake state park in seneca falls, green lakes state park east of syracuse) that you can camp at, and one option that I sort of neglected is that many of the locks have areas available for camping, either all the time, or at some you can ask the lockmaster if they would let you for the night. Nice free option.
