It's an interesting design exercise. There is no such thing as a hubless wheel. The wheel has a hub, it's just really big. Don't see any benefit to it either other than looking cool- which it does.

I'd love to try an ultimate wheel some day. Those things are so friggin' cool.

It looks twitchy to me. The rider in the video seems to have trouble keeping the front wheel steady. Hubless bicycle sounds nice BUT there is a hub on the front wheel so the name is technically wrong.

It does look cool though.

The rake/trail of the front end is poorly designed.

Would suck to change a flat

Wow, didn't even consider that. I wonder if they used some kind of solid rubber tire on the back, that would feel like crap. It's probably a normal tire... yikes.

cool concept needs some more R&D. Was that fixed?

it looks like he addresses that in the "finished" product. The tire looks accessable from the left side of the bike (non-drive side).

I would think the an open wheel design like this would require bearings all the way around the wheel. If so would that increase overall friction making a less efficient wheel?

That dude needs to get some real shoes and not wear flip flops when riding a bike. He's going to be sorry when he messes up a toe somehow. And wear a helmet for cripes sake! I know it was just for the vid but still.

That's exactly the problem with "hubless" wheels. You also have more rotating inertia due to the heavy race & bearings being at the rim, not in the center of the wheel. This was an idea that had it's 15 minutes of fame in the motorcycle world back in the late 80's. No benefit and a lot of problems.

The only benifit I can really see of that is utilizing the space that has been freed up by putting a set of batterys and a motor in it. Making it an e-bike.

That's how the one wheel motorcycle works. The motor and the rider go inside the wheel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdq4wer7vgk&NR=1 Those things are wild. I guess you have to be able to ride a unicycle well before you can jump in one of those.
