This popped up today on my local craigslist...

Vintage 78 Raleigh Competition GS with Campy...

Guy is asking $875... which I think seem very high... I did a ebay search and found similar bikes selling for $450-600.

I'm not interested in buying the bike but thought someone on the forum might... happy to go check it out in person and ship it if the seller will not ship.

I am the original owner of this mint condition 25-inch (64 cm) frame-size Raleigh Competition GS bike. I bought it new in San Francisco in April 1979. The frame was made in England by Carlton. Before I rode it I had the brakes and crank set upgraded to Campagnolo Record equipment. The original sales receipt, warranty and maintenance book come with the bike. Also included is the Silca tire pump bought with the bike. The tires are Continental but are getting old. Believe it or not,this bike has been ridden less than 3500 miles! All equipment on it is original from the day I bought it. The bike has never been crashed. Its paint and decals are in excellent condition. All components work well. The Brooks saddle is like new. Yeah, I am interested, but not at that price. I bent the forks on my 1978-79 Raleigh Competition GS and looking for spare parts and/or replacement. Here are my Competitions.
The black one is an exact copy of the one you show on Craigslist. My son paid $25 for it 30 years ago. He gave it to me 29 years ago.. :)

Yes, I would say that is very high. I would think $300.00 is closer depending on condition. In my opinion this is one of the rare times that the Campy equipped version is worth less than the earlier non G.S. model. It's hard to tell from the pictures but the fork looks a little off to me.

mkeller, if you are talking about the picture that I poster, you are very sharp. I crashed on the black Competition, and the fork is bent. Right now, I am looking for either a replacement fork, bike, or get it straighten. Which ever process will get me back a black Competition.

I ain't paying no $875, or $575 unless it came with two Playboy Bunnies!!! :)

I am about to pull the trigger on a CHERRY, and I mean CHERRY, 1978 Raleigh Competition GS. I am about 90% into the deal. Just got to figured out how to pick it or get it shipped. When I get this one, that will make me have THREE Raleigh Competitions. Two 78s, and an 85 Competitiion.. This chit is getting dam right addicting. :)

BTW, gotta figured out how to slip this pass the wifee too!! :)

If and when I do it get it, I will post some big, big pictures of the bike and my smile!! :)
