View Full Version : My turn to get hit by a car!

I got hit in a roundabout last night when going through and an approaching car failed to obey the yield sign. I glanced off the front quarter-panel, and flipped over the hood. Gave my helmet a good smacking on landing. Glad I had it! I'm a little sore today, and I can't put any pressure on my left hand, but otherwise I'm pretty much alright aside from minor road rash. The best part was right after, I was all hopped up on adrenaline and the driver got out and he's all, "OMG are you OK?" and I'm all, "get back in your car before I beat the **** out of you." Sweet awesome!

Sorry to hear that man. Glad that you weren't seriously injured. Hopefully we don't all take turns with getting hit by cars. Good thing you were wearing a helmet. Make sure you get a new one. One hit and they aren't good anymore.

glad you got away with minor injuries.

can we say the same about the bike?

legally speaking, how do you go about dealing with something like this if the driver is at fault and you get injuries and/or your bike gets EFFed up?
do you collect their insurance info? call the police? etc.?

Hope your stuff gets taken care of and glad you're okay.

There's a weird little intersection around here with a yield sign for one of the lanes. NO ONE obeys it and I have to dodge clueless drivers there occasionally.

Seems like the driver may have been genuinely sorry, but +1 street cred for being a badass. Since you hit your head, you need to buy a new helmet. Helmets are only good for one accident whether you think its ok or not. If there is an insurance case pending you should really delete this post. The lawyers for the insurance company often check internet forums for anything that may make you look bad, or help their case. Hope your bikes ok, and you feel better.

Man very sorry about what happened hope all Is well with you and the bike.

I know if I get hit by a car im calling the cops asap. Failure to yeild is the least of what I will be charging the ******* who threathens my life with his lack of judgement. If I miss work he will be covering that too. The full MSRP of my bike. (if It needs replacement) And any medical expenses.

I hate people who gouge the system and sue for millions over what are accidents. But, I would not hesitate for a second to use the system to get what I deserve due to a driver on a cell phone.

First thing you should do is call the police and get a police report. Try to take lots of pictures if you have a camera. Also if you have injuries, you really should go to the hospital unless they are extremely minor. If you do all this you should have a pretty good case and the insurance company will settle with you fast.

i have a bike bell with a very loud DING and use it OFTEN. especially when approaching intersections with cars in the right lane. so many near misses when im riding straight, clueless driver making a right turn without a signal or aware im on their right.

this is good to know about as well....

if they get away, and you are hurt, and your bike is messed up, does that mean they get away scott free from being financially responsible? does that mean you are basically EFFED?

keep your eye out for license plates, i guess.

What happens if its a hit and run?

SOL most of the time.

Although my friend had a motorist chase down the offending vehicle (guy blew stop sign (two-way, she had right-of-way), t-boned her without even hitting brakes, launched her over the car, looked back, saw her laid out and kept driving). She could have really gone after him and should have IMO, got two days pay, medical bills and her bike repaired. Guy is still driving with a slap on the wrist.

Last Saturday night I almost was hit as well ? Riding at night, an SUV hogged both lanes a couple of blocks away in the residential neighborhood area on a side street. Darn near hit me even on the farthest right hand side of the road. What was strange about it, driver was straddling the center line and then seemed to veer unintentionally towards me over a hundred feet or so. Almost like he was preoccupied and just not paying attention. I was prepared to go rural and use the green lane as there wasn't a gutter & curb on this side street.

Better than when I got hit,

Driver gets out, asks if I'm ok, looks back at his car with my bike mangled underneath and asks "was your bike like that before?"

I am going to get a new helmet, have the bike checked out and I'm going to the e-room for an x-ray now, it's still hurting pretty badly. Police were there, there was a report. I have to wait a few days to get the report before I can contact the guy's insurance.

Like, for example, evidence that you assaulted the driver... Maybe, oh, I dunno, threatened to beat their ass.

My cousin has been in the hospital for 8 weeks as a result of a motorist turning in front of him while he was on a ride. The driver said she just didn't see him. It was broad daylight and a open road. Maybe wasn't looking...?? (Don't know if she was on a cell phone). There is a good chance he will never ride again. He broke 11 bones and totaled his knee. He was in a coma for 8 days. Still rehabing but feeling pretty good that he is alive. In one of the article in the local newspaper about the accident there is a section (online of course) where readers can comment. Some jackass mentioned that statistics show it is almost always the cyclist fault! Oh really. I guess my cousin must deserve his new plight in life. It must have somehow been his fault (she was cited by police).

What happens if its a hit and run?
there was that CNN news thing about a guy who always have a camera on his bike video taping in case he ever got into an accident. He said everytime he gets into an accident he never had a witness so he started using a camera. My co-worker recently started using it and a few weeks into it he got doored by a police. I think I'm gonna get a camera soon too. Maybe u'll catch the license of the guy on hit and run? Iono..

Almost got hit the other day. It was getting darker outside, guy was pulling out of a road. Guy pulled up, looked left (and saw me I presumed) then looked right, then proceeded to pull out as I was biking toward him. Nearly nailed him until he slammed on his brakes...

Lucky your friend didn't get hit with a felony for recording un-duty police officers.

I really can't imagine that riding with a camera every time you get on the bike would be practical, and if anything it'll just record the dozens of minor traffic violations the average cyclist commits every ride.

Yeah seems more trouble then its worth until that ONE day you get hit :(

...which will undoubtedly be the day you forgot to turn on the camera.
Or, the camera is destroyed/damaged enough by the incident that you can't get any useful footage from it.

I'm sure everyone who gets into a hit and run wishes they had one, but really it's kinda like buying earthquake insurance in the midwest.

True. I think that when I can start riding again I'll get one of those keychain seized cameras from ebay. They're super small and the video is good enough.

Highly unlikely unless you're run over by two or three buses. I know a guy who has proven (accidentally) that a MicroSD can survive the trip through a toddler without losing data, and there are some web sites where people have intentionally smashed regular SD cards and still been able to recover all the data.

ah well. The way i see it is, chance of capturing hit and run with a camera 50%. Chance of capturing hit an run w/o a camera 15%.

btw, how is that considered a felony?

Regardless of the condition of the non-volatile memory after the incident, you're most likely to get useful information - license plate, make/model - after you've been creamed, or immediately before, neither of which is ideal. Anything after the impact to about a second before is not likely to get written to memory at all, since the camera will be wrecked before it gets a chance.

A few people are being charged with felonies related to certain state wiretapping/eavesdropping laws, for recording on-duty police officers.

YOU'RE EFFED!!!!!!

Even if you do get the plate number and find the guy the system won't protect you, even if the driver is caught by the police! I personally know people who have caught the driver or witnesses + police caught the driver and the system did NOTHING for them! nothing, you're on your own

Yep, not gonna be cheap that's for sure ! Word of advice, they try to settle, don't sign anything as final settlement, you got hit by a 3,000 lb car.

You may have a broken collarbone (clavicle). I've broken mine 3 times, and the main symptom other than pain is that you can't raise your arm on that side.

whaaaaat. that's ********! Well at least when my coworker got doored by a police his injuries weren't bad at all. Just few minor road rash so he never had to use the vid in any legal actions.

well getting creamed in any way is not ideal :P I think the camera is usually not the point of first impact when u get into an accident so it'll likely record a little more of being creamed than u'ld think. Say in the case where one rode head on into something, the first impact would be on the front wheel. Then if the force is big enough, person fly over handlebars, bike tips forward, then maybe the camera mounted on the handlebar will crash. But then that camera still got the whole shot.
