Tandem Cycling - kickstand for 98 burley rock n roll?

Hi!! mroski and I are the proud owners of a new to us 98 Burley Rock n Roll tandem. The only thing
missing is a kickstand. Do these bikes normally come with a kickstand? If not, how do you all keep
them upright when you aren't riding them? Help, please.

I've seen motorcycle-like kickstands at the Northwest Tandem Rally, but I just bought a Click-Stand (www.click-stand.com) which a few folks on the rally raved about: weighs almost nothing and you can take it or not take it according to the ride. My wife and I have found that on large organized rides it's very difficult to find a piece of fence or a curb to use in lieu of some sort of kickstand - thus the Click-Stand.

No, very few 'premium' bicycles come with kick stands... never mind fenders, both of which were standard fare when we were growing up in the 60's and 70's. Once the Euro racing bikes and then the mountain bikes came to dominate the desires of consumers, all of the things that made bicycles practical for basic, all-weather transportation disappeared... or, more accurately, became expensive accessories.

Anyway, what has traditionally be the preferred kickstand for tandems that really needed some type of stand, e.g., loaded touring tandems, tandems ridden with kids, etc. is the SKS or Esge Pletscher 'double' kickstand (http://www.biketrailershop.com/esge-double-kickstand-p-1380.html). It works very much like a center stand on a motorcycle in that when used it holds the tandem upright with the rear wheel elevated.

As for how 'we' keep our tandem upright, it depends... Sometimes we find a wall, fence or tree to lean it up against, sometimes we'll lean it up against another tandem so that they hold each other up, and sometimes we just lay it down on the ground when there's not a suitable place to lean it:

+1 on the click-stand. But we recently picked up a couple of "pump straps (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441772623&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302693749&printFriendly=n)" to replace the brake bands. Much more secure.

In 33+ years o tandeming have never had a kickstand on any of our 2-seaters.

Lean it against a wall/tree/fence/curb. Nothing to lean on? Put it down on the ground/grass (that way it can't fall down!).
Have seen a few folk utilizing some type of kickstands, but is by no means a necessity.
