ok ok ok i know from the start i definitely shouldn't start this thread, being this is the SSFG forum, buuuuuut im scared of the meanies in the road forums, and you guys have been cool to me so far, so what the hell, here it goes....

Remember the "road bike with fixed gear style" thread?

well, that inspired me in my next build project.


I have built a fixed gear bike, a 700c coaster brake bike....and now that i have this centurion accordo frame sitting around....

...i think now i want to build a 7 or 8 speed road bike with some street-track aesthetics and feel....basically, this frame, track crankset, cassette in back, nitto bullhorns with barend brake levers and either a thumb shifter by the stem or perhaps clamp on downtube shifter.


NOW, to my question at hand....

any of you aware of a nice wheelset 200 or below that takes a common shimano cassette and has a sort of velocity deep V-esque aesthetic? any specific make/model i should be aware of? any shops/ebay sellers/online stores you have bought from you could point in their direction? \
etc.

i will say the spacing width between the dropouts is 126, although i hear stretching it to 130 is no biggie. i bought the frame for 40 dollars so i dont mind futzing things a bit.


anywho, i feel like a jerk asking these questions and you are all more than welcome to flame me for doing so. BUT if i get a little info out of it then the thread was a success!


oh and please dont think i havn't done ANY research....i have, albeit not too much lol, but it seems everything i find is moreso roadie aesthetic...oh and im sure someone will flame me for going for a certain look, thats fine, i probably deserve it ;p

The road guys have bookoo gear, 7 speeds should be easy to find. Vintage Phil is always nice.

Spend some time to get the thumb shifter position dialed in and it's almost as natural feeling as brifters.

About 4-5 years ago I bought these wheels used on eBay for $140 with shipping. They are tubulars with Shimano Dura Ace hubs and Velocity Elite Pro rims. The rear wheel is 130mm and the freehub will accept Shimano 8,9 & 10 speed cassettes. Maybe you can find something like this.

The 1x7/8/9 is all the rage. You're gonna love it.

It's really pretty much how it looks.

0. Flop'n'chop
1. Clamp on thumb shifter; remove the lever that comes with 'em, replace with 600 (or any other) DT shifter
2. Any TT/reverse levers
3. ???
4. PROFIT

I'm actually thinking about migrating the setup over to a set of "real" bullhorns (the ones I got from Nashbar for $9 last week), as the current flop'n'chops are about 38cm.

excellent! basically that is what i want on this build! (well, with nitto 021s but close enough)
just curious, what shifter is that, what kind of derailleur is it attached to, and what cassette and hub?

and might as well ask....how important is it to have matching components? IE shimano shifter with shimano derail......obviously cassette needs to fit the hub.....but.....possible to do campy derail on shimano cassette with shimano shifters? or should i just go all campy everything or all shimano (probably all shimano for availibility/price)

I run Velocity Deep V's on my road bike.

That's a Shimano 600 front derailleur DT shifter bolted onto a Suntour 6-speed thumb shifter mount. The derailleur is 600 7-speed, as is the cassette. Since I'm using the FD shifter, it's all friction. No indexing.

As far as matching components: friction mode is the great equalizer. If you are going to try and run it indexed you might want to research compatibility a little bit, but I get by without it.

I had a wheelset built up using kinlin xr-300s. They are the same depth as velocity deep vs but weigh a lot less. They are also not the expensive. If you end up going handbuilt keep them in mind.

I would suggest H Plus Son SL42's laced to Ultegra or Formula.

1x9 is great for riding around the city and inexpensive to set up compared to a fixed gear (just the cost of derailer and bar end shifter). Even though you already have a frameset, you can sometimes find older road frames with vertical drops for cheap on craigslist since people don't race them and can't convert them to fixed.

Oh, and bar end shifter x cross levers on the end of the horns

1x9 with a friction shifter rocks. if it were me, i would go with silver box section wheels and one of campagnolo's somewhat rare "right only" clamp on down tube shifter:

I had them custom built, by the wheel guy at my LBS. They are hand built and tensioned and currently have 5000 miles in them and they are still true as the day they were finished. I've had then relieved and retensioned and trued one time. We used Wheelsmith spokes on a midlevel hub, Tiagra, 36 spoke set up, 3 cross weave on the rear and 2 cross on the front. I use the road bike for recreational riding and touring

I've never done this, but you could just buy a Velocity flip flop wheel and thread on a 7-speed freewheel. You'd have to have it re-dished though. Depending on where your chainring is, you might even be able to run it fixed on one side and 7-speed on the other! Of course, you'd need two chains, and you'd probably want to remove the rear derailer in fixed mode... But it's an idea.

@adriano: no setback and chode stems? your arms can't be that short.

the stem is short without a doubt, but i have 45mm of setback.

i like the looks but unfamiliar with the brands.
NOTE: im not trying to build a super light weight race machine....more so an around town and once in a while 15-25 mile ride bike with decently sturdy wheels that look nice. HOWEVER i dont want a wallmart quality wheelset either lol

velocity deep v ROAD wheelset seems like a good idea but its turning out to be a b!t@h searching for a pre built wheelset since search results keep coming up with TRACK hubed wheelsets.
i guess i should keep looking.
