Apparently Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, Inception, Brick, etc) rides what appears to be a brakeless fixed gear. This is what became of it...

also, the wound looks pretty real. Potentially a mishap that resulted from him being inexperienced on a brakeless fixed gear and being forced to do high speed stunts in traffic.

Why on earth would anyone route a brake like that on a fixed gear. I feel like the research people who were responsible for that goof must have been pretty lazy. "Okay so it has one gear, can't coast and most people ride with one brake. Done"

Not ass messengers ride fixed. Yes, the brake is routed oddly but he might be like many of us and ride with his front brake on the right or a certain scene demanded a right hand be free while he braked. I'm assuming this bike would be used by the stunt man as well.

Having the cable on the "wrong" side of the top tube is minor for a movie like this. You'd have to freeze frame the entire movie to probably even catch it.

But looking at the placement of the lever, it seems that the cable routing would be correct. I'd have to stand over the bike to make the correct deduction. See how the lever is close to the stem? To tuck back around might kink it.

Mind you.... looking at the last shot I see a freewheel on the flop side. Looks setup fixed at that point in the filming process.

He is riding fixed, with a back brake only. Which is not only redundant, but messes up the whole aesthetic thing that a fixed gear has. Don't really care what side the lever or cable housing is on, just that he is riding with a back brake only... which no matter if he is riding SS or fixed, it's still pretty dumb considering there isn't a front brake.

Nope. I got your point and skipped right to the real point. It's a MOVIE. They want it to look brakeless I'm sure but artistic license and stuntmen demand they run a rear brake. There may be a scene where he has to have perfect timing in doing a skid and avoiding a car and to blow the shot costs big money. So they add a brake.

TBRO, no prob - lots of people I know make films up here in Vancouver. Movies do weird stuff. Buddy of mine did the Charlie St. Cloud movie and had to teach Zac Efron how to sail. He said they did all sorts of bizarre stuff that makes no sense in sailing. On the screen he said it looked seamless compared to the craziness he saw.
