Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Who listens to music while they ride???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's a safety hazard... but man doesn't music sound great when you're flying down the street? I usually have it on 1/2 to 3/4 volume level. I can usually hear if a car is coming up behind me (unless its a prius or something), but I wouldn't be able to notice if my bb was making weird noises.

For those of you who think its irresponsible, share your thoughts. And for the other half of you who do listen to their ipods, what are you guys listen to?

I've been vibing on Nujabes. On the indie-rock side of things, I've been listening to the shout out louds alot.

I don't listen to music when I bike but I do listen to music excessively when I'm at home.

I've only done it a couple times. I use the ear bud on the right side so my left ear on the side of traffic can keep a listen. It's not my thing.

I've reallllly wanted to, but I don't have the guts to do it. Even with one earbud.

I don't listen to music when I ride, but I did save 15% on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

I listen to music using this beautiful device right here!http://www.maclife.com/files/u36/0807_iHomeCycler02_380.jpg
fits in my water bottle holder, runs on AA batteries and is loud enough to hear it in busy NYC traffic.

I like to listen to music too. I have my rules though for myself. I turn my neck & head more often to compensate for decreased hearing. I become more like a deaf person, my visual senses compensates. My biggest rule, everyone gets priority over me regarding right of way. Pedestrians always go first regardless, but when it comes to cars, I wave them to go FIRST ! I don't leave it to chance for a mis communication, I will stop completely to let all other traffic go first if it comes down to a conflict. That pretty much is a standard rule though, but even more so when I have an mp3 player playing.

One ear bud in left ear works well for me. Along with using Cyclemeter to updated me with various stats on the mile.

No music on city rides, which usually involves a bunch of friends anyway.

No music on geared rides if riding in a pack.

Always music when riding solo on geared rides.

I do, but i usually have it so low i can hear my chainring. I like to hear a beat, but I don't want cars sneaking up on me.

I would love too, but dont want to compromise my safety. I run brakeless and need all my senses at 110%.

I've started listening to music while commuting one week ago and boy it feels good ! But i will stop because my riding has been changing since and i feel i'm taking more risks.

For me, music almost makes the ride. I usually listen to chillwave and go riding around 11 or midnight.

I listen to Buffett on weekends when riding my MTB on paved bike trails but not on weekdays when I ride streets early morning in the dark and evenings when it is getting dark.

I've done it the couple times I was riding my mtb but not since I got my fixed gear. I guess I'll try the right ear bud only ..

I always ride it with one in the right ear(on the road). But on trails, I use both earbuds.

I listen to only one earbud. I almost ALWAYS have music or comedy podcasts playing. I don't know why I like to hear people talk when I ride...

I listen to the music of my chain and tires. Anything would seem to ruin the ride.

I personally always ride with music whenever possible. Riding with music just gets my blood pumping and gets me hyped and ready for anything. Maybe that is just because I listen to Dubstep. I have pretty sharp senses so even though my ears are occupied by music, my eyes are always scavenging and looking at all sides.

my cell phone plays mp3s and has pretty loud speakers... so I don't need buds. it's safe, and it lets people know I'm coming up behind them. I listen to Grateful Dead mostly.

I've started listening to talk radio podcasts while riding. With speech, there are so many pauses that hearing traffic isn't a problem. Click and Clack, Bill Handel, Clark Howard. The commute is a lot more fun now.

I do occasionally, but half the time I forget to grab the iPod. It's never my priority when I go out riding. I love my music, and when I do ride with it I bounce between one/two ear buds and the volume is just high enough to hear the music, but only just so. If I know there will be cars behind me, only the right one, otherwise both; which is to say almost never both until I am practically home, where they come off to be taken over by the speakers :D
