I wanna buy something quick before it sells out forever...need $3500. Credit card habit is almost completely under control now, so I don't wanna go down that road again. I just need to pay off one more card and that will take most of my disposable income after living cost bills and retirement savings over the next six months...but by then the item I am coveting (a watch) will surely be gone. (I have been looking, only one or two merchants can still get it for me on the grey market).

So, short of doing anything illegal, what's a fast way to make extra money? Any ideas are helpful and appreciated...

This is FOO so....

1) Donate some sperm.
2) Donate some plasma.
3) Give a desperate ol' lady a good time for a fee.
4) What is that project starting website where people donate money to you?

sounds like you're coming out of one bad path and going onto another. Ask yourself: do I NEED this watch or WANT it? Buying a $3500 watch when you don't have money for it is a very stupid thing to do. Given you're not rich. It's not the same as spending $3500 on an emergency medical situation.

If you really want it that badly, just go down the credit card route and shred your cards after.

Sell a kidney. Even better, sell your wife's kidney.

I don't 'need' it, I want it. Does anyone 'need' a watch in this age of cell phones, computer screens and so forth?

I'd rather not use any more credit for such large things. If I could buy it right now on a card at 0% (and actually, I have excellent credit and could, if I wanted), no biggie, but i want to pay my existing bill off first (also 0%, btw).

I also have enough savings to buy it, but I've developed an online 'envelope budget' system for my wife and I and our liquid money is earmarked for emergencies, taxes, vacation and so forth.

My own personal savings available for such luxuries is nowhere near enough. I put away a bit every month, but the problem is it will take awhile to save up at that rate (about 10 months).

Now, I am in no great hurry to get the watch, but because it's been discontinued, I am not likely to find it too easily the longer I wait. So, I am just figuring it will be gone by the time I pay off my current debt or have enough saved - which as I say, would be about 6-10 months from now... So just looking for untapped ways of raising cash in the meanwhile. For instance, part time work could do it...maybe a headhunter in my field for freelance work 10-20 hours/week?

I also of course have considered selling stuff I don't care about as much but the economy is such that many things that normally sell well are not moving right now...so I'm holding off on that.

I was also thinking about setting aside $100-200 or so and trying my hand at the stock market - kind of like taking a capped fund to Vegas to blow - if you win, great, if not, no harm done. Maybe in stocks I'll actually learn something even if i lose the whole pile.

also - my kidneys were eaten with some fava beans with a nice chianti and my jet ski was repossessed some time ago. I couldn't afford the last payment of $24.

Now these ideas, I am considering...do you actually get $ for fluids? I 've given blood often...all I got was some sugary snacks and a lousy tee-shirt.

No,wait - no shirt, just the snacks.

I like the gigolo idea.

Wasn't there a website where someone started with a paper clip and traded up to $1M in like two months? Was it Craigs List?

Look around the house and garage -- I bet you have something you don't need and can sell. I just had a "garage sale" and made $4200!!! The Plus is my garage is now clean and the house un-cluttered.

Yeah I thought that foolish as well. I wear a $19.99 kids Timex watch all the time (actually I have several - different colors), even with suits. I love those cheap watches! Why anyone would spend that sort of bike buying money on a watch is beyond me!

Yes! I been wearing the same $14.99 Timex Ironman watch that was purchased from Target three years ago. I am too lazy to go back to my more elaborate Swatch that I bought for less than $50 in Germany 10 years ago.

Put your want on a credit card then mow lawns or do some household work to pay for the purchase.

Could you come up with a Ponzi scheme?

pgoat
08-19-10, 02:08 PM
yes, a watch. Not just 'a' watch, 'the' watch...A Timex is fine, but I love watches. I'm real picky and don't like 99% of what's out there. I narrowed it down to 2 or 3 that I really love and this one is the holy grail for me. (btw, $3500 is chicken feed in the world of high-end watches - this is a everyday wearer- albeit a very nice one, not some diamond encrusted thing you borrow for the Oscars).

If I can't get my hands on one now, the world won't end. I have other nice watches already. And I can always look for a used one, of course.

In the past I just would have charged it, impulse buy.

I've gotten a lot better at resisting those destructive urges. I don't wanna feed the endless cycle of desire and consume/purchase, but this is one luxury I want to give myself, if possible. Not on credit, not using our emergency savings. I'm looking at it as a creative exercise to raise cash. $3500 is a lot of money - but it's not THAT much money. The big drama here comes with the race against time. I knew this particular model watch was selling out for about a year now, but refused to even consider buying it before, due to paying down other debts first. I'm in a better position now, so am trying to be proactive about it.

btw, Pam & Danno, I wish I had your garage!!:) I do have some musical equipment and such that I could easily raise the money by selling but I would take HUGE losses on at present. As in, I'd be lucky to get 50% back of what I paid - and this is for stuff in mint condition. 9-10 years ago I was flipping instruments and making money, but this is a different climate. So while I am more than willing to part with that stuff, not sure I wanna take that kind of loss, as I still do play and enjoy the instruments.

At least it's an option...opinions welcome on that option - would you sell some of the gear anyway and live with the losses?

pgoat
08-19-10, 02:14 PM
I should add, I have been going by ebay "completed auction' prices for that musical gear...I did consider listing them on CL and Harmony Central at a fair but higher price than what is being paid on ebay, just to see if I get bites ...Probably won't, but as the ads are free, it can't hurt, right?

Indulging in a self destructive urge is not a luxury, my friend. You have already figured out that this is not about buying a watch.

It's not a question of needing it versus wanting it. The point is that no material thing is worth the wind-up you are experiencing right now. The anxiety and existential terror that you are knowingly putting yourself through cannot be justified by the acquisition of anything outside of yourself. You already have yourself. There is only one of you. There are more than one of this watch.

Try and relax, and come back to the center. There is no hurry. Please do not burn all the candles in the house at the same time, because it is much harder to save a burning house than it is to light a match.

I still do want it, but you;re right, but I don't wanna wind it up like I have in the past. I'll think on it but hopefully from a calmer, stronger place. Just saying the world won't end is a big step for me (recovering shopaholic).

Let me get this straight....

You're in credit card debt...

You want to buy a $3500 with money you don't have.

And you're convinced that you no longer have a problem with shopping.

Time to step back, take a deep breath, and think about what you're saying. What would you tell a friend if they came to you with this scenario?

I think this is most likely gonna be it, and it would be a guitar, since my cameras aren't worth that much. I'm not gonna rush, taking Dipper's advice. I might throw a few free ads up and see if someone is willing to pay what I'd ask. If not, oh well.

Umm...I was just joking. I know you wouldn't take a camera away from your wife and I know the guitars mean a lot to you.

Please, before you do this, try to rationalize the gains from a watch vs the gains from something creative such as the guitar. So much of you comes out of it than does a watch.
