Foo - Is it possible to mix anything with beer and make a better tasting drink?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Beer, not being on the top of the list of tasty beverages that goes down easy, basically is a stand alone product. Or is it?
Tea and coffee you mix with brandy or similar and vodka you mix with whatever juice. Practically all alcoholic beverages have their cocktails, but what of beer?
Has anyone found ANYTHING you can mix with beer to make it taste better than it already does? maybe cap-beer-cino?
dis-includes food that you mix beer into, like Sheppard's pie, because that's not a drink.
fill a shot glass 3/4 of the way with Amaretto, top with 151 rum, light with a match.
Quench flaming shot glass by dropping it in the beer.
Slam beer.
Tastes like a Dr. Pepper.

Part of the idea behind beer is that it's supposed to stand on its own. You shouldn't need to add anything.
Of course, tastes vary wildly, so what you hate, others may legitimately like.
There's also a lot of variety. An American pilsner-style lager is a lot different than a hefeweizen or a porter. Look around to find something you like. Actually hefeweizens are a very good beer to start with. I'd say they are, at least very nearly, the most universally palatable variety of beer. A lot of people getting used to beers add a lemon or orange wedge, but I prefer mine without.
Also, unlike distilled liquor, most of the flavor you put into the beer at the start stays with it, although it will likely change over the course of the brewing and fermentation. This leads to flavored beers like. I see a lot of coffee stouts and porters. Blackberry seems occasionally popular for medium-malts like ambers. Coriander is a frequent ingredient in Belgians, etc.
I also know of a couple places that make a beer-float, usually with a stout as the replacement for root-beer.

Absolutely.
Start with any rich golden colored beer or lighter.
Fill a glass halfway with spicy clamato, touch of Worcestershire shire sauce, some pepper, salt, and a good amount of lime juice.
Fill the rest with beer.
Enjoy.
6 oz beer
6 oz orange juice
1 shot Amaretto
some recipes also add Southern Comfort
It's called a lunchbox and is quite tasty. I wouldn't use a good beer. The regular dishwater (Bud, Miller, etc) is fine.
put a shot of tomato juice in a glass of beer. It will surprise you, tasty.

half and half mixture of a good Pilsner Beer and White Lemonade. In Ireland, it's called a SHandy, in Germany up around Hamburg, it's called Astel Wasser.
At the Hofbrau House in Munich, they'll mix half coke and half beer for those who don't want another full beer. And it's not bad, either. (But they won't bring you a glass of water!)
When I was in Trinidad they would cut their Guinness with sweetened condensed milk.
Wasn't so bad.
They also do the Shandy thing.

1/2 beer, 1/2 Bloody Mary mix. Delicious, especially the next day/morning when a little "hair of the dog" is in order.

Other than lunchboxes and lots of limes I have nothing. You just need to find good beer that you like. Or Natty light which in general tastes like bad water.

Oh yes, clamato is actually pretty good with beer.
But anyway, soju bombs are pretty delish. Get a glassful of soju and a shot of beer. Drop beer in soju. Drink up!

A really good beer, I'd never dilute. that would be a crime.
..Other day after a ride, I was surprised when some club members added a shot of Red Bull to their beer. They seemed to like it..
In the past others have suggested beer and a shot of orange juice..
Beer and hard cider ain't too bad..
funny memories with clamato.
A silly friend once drank 2 bottles of clamato and he wouldn't stop farting the next day.

A good beer is perfect as is. However, generic US beer should be mixed at a ratio of 1:100 with water to dilute the lovely taste.
Half beer half cider, called a snakebike. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakebite_(beer_cocktail) My first Foo post in about a year, and it is about beer, a drink which I hate :)
Has anyone found ANYTHING you can mix with beer to make it taste better than it already does?
Yes - more beer.
Although it does make dandy tasting hushpuppies, even if that seems a waste of good beer.

Both wins. Shandy on a hot day after cutting the lawn is great, shandy on a hot day without cutting the lawn is even better.

Another German mix -- pilsner type beer with fizzy orange pop. They call it a Radler, which can also be a name for a bicyclist. I wonder if there's a link there -- a low-alcohol drink for someone on a bike?
German orangeade is less sickly sweet than its North American equivalent, and less violently orange too. (Think Orangina)
Me, I like my beer straight from the fridge with an icy frosted glass. That's enough mixing for me.
It's a lot simpler than everyone's making it out to be... If you don't like the taste of beer, don't drink it. Switch to a kool-aid or gatorade or some other sugar laden concoction. Quality beer (also known as micro brews, craft beers, etc...) shouldn't be mixed with anything. Like good liqour, drink it straight, or don't bother. You're wasting money.

Guinness Punch. Tastes a whole lot better than it sounds.
They also do the Shandy thing.
That's common in Britain too.

I'll second that. I drank it in Spain, cerveza con limon. In 32 degrees C, it's a great thirst quencher. You can drink gallons of the stuff and still walk straight... more or less.

Or, you know, you can let people drink whatever they want to drink at whatever price level they like.
Negra Modelo makes for a great michelada. If this offends you then hush up and don't yuck my yum.

Wow,
No one has mentioned a classic. Lime and lager. A shot of Lime Cordial in a glass of lager. Quite popular in parts of England, especially as a first beer after a rugby match.

"Is it possible to mix anything with beer and make a better tasting drink?"
The same question was asked in the very beginning when beer was just a twinkle in the eye of the Sumerians (The oldest proven records of brewing are about 6,000 years old and refer to the Sumerians) but it went like this: "Is it possible to mix anything with piss and make a better tasting drink?" ;0)

I'm a pretty flexible guy with most food and drinks... but the clamato / chelada was just plain disgusting.
Pilsner w/ a squeezed half lime is ok.
And there are plenty of beers that are easier to approach, like Blue Moon, or some of fruity ones like Leinenlugel Raspberry Wheat (or whatever they have these days).
But for beer, best bet is to go to a micro brewery with someone knowledgable, do the variety sampler and learn to appreciate the different styles of beer. Then you can simply drink / enjoy beer for what it is.

I've never mixed beer but some of this sounds good. I'm a fan of Corona with lime if that counts for anything, but that's as interesting as I've gotten. Actually, come to think of it, pretty much every non-beer-drinker I know still goes for Corona.

Allen, if we ever meet, I'm gonna have to buy you a drink. Half of what you say hints at yet another story. :thumb:
I've had more than a few 'boilermakers,' in my time. This tried and true libation is, of course, just a shot of distilled spirit gulped down neat and fast - with a beer chugged close behind to chase it down your gullet.
Whiskey is the traditional boilermaker spirit.
However, if one is wanting to dilute beer itself with something... well, you are probably not ready for slamming liquor and beer together, all at once.

Über incorrect, true Packer fans don't touch AB products...no disrespect to MO but let's be real.

After a 6 hours of massaging and then an hour ride home in 115º heat, a michelada is pretty damn good!

Ill give you that, it IS good. Damn tasty, in fact, depending on how its made. I like mine neat, with just a shot of lime juice and a dash of picante sauce.
But the micehalda remains beer, flavored. While that was the OP'S intent, It's really not in the heady realm of the true boilermaker.
PS Ill probably be sorry I asked, but just what are you massaging for 6 hours?

German tourists who have overstayed their visas, a Rasta named, Engine Bob, a rented Suzuki Samurai, picking fruit in the rain forrest, having a sprained ankle treated by a real witch doctor, a terrorist bombing on stage during Festival, the best food known to man during a 3 day Hindu wedding, oh, and rum.

Hm, after trying shandy for the first time and finding out it did taste good I can't rule this one out without trying it. One of the characters in Canary Row ordered a beer milkshake one day, and didn't like it.

Depth Charge=glass of beer, drop in a shot glass of whiskey, drink fast before you wear it.
Tidy Bowl=Short glass of beer,1 shot of blue curacao,3 raisinets in the bottom of the glass.
Beer is not to be mixed...
1 oz beef drippings (au jus)
1 oz Vodka
Splash of Worcestershire
Shoot that back, then enjoy a nice cold beer.

This reminds me of another beer drink you may wish to consider. I used to see it in Germany. It's called, "bier mit schoss."
This was a shot glass placed in the bottom of a large, clear beer glass... Small glass within a larger glass, essentially.
Next, some sort of heavy, sugary liqueur, like Kirsch, was carefully poured into the shot glass, and beer carefully filled in after. The net effect was a glass of beer with the shot glass in the bottom - still full of the liqueur.
The plan is to swill the beer fast, until the contents of the shot glass came in last, washing your mouth with the sweet liqueur. The end, and best part, was hearing the shot glass clink against the teeth, as the drink is finished.
However, this was a womans' drink, in my experience. As I recall, it was also thought that any young woman who could properly down a few 'bier mit schoss' would soon find her teeth caressing somethi.... well, you get the idea.

It is fine to mix beers. A Harp with a little Guiness is rather nice. Of course only the Irish are sick enough to neam it a Black and Tan.

I don't mind lime in my Mexi brews. Hit a chelada or a red beer (beer+tomato juice) occasionally.
This is likely my favorite not too beery beer:
