hey, i want to change the breaks on my old mountain bike, they are just in a general diserary, so i was wondering on how much would it cost about, and any sugestions on where i should look. Thanks.

Hmm new Brakes ehh...
Since i dont know anything about your riding style i would just suggest getting a new set of V-brakes. Go to your lbs and they should be able to set you up with something that will work on your bike.
Disc brakes are nice but are alot more expensive and are probably overkill, unless you really need the quick stopping power.

Disc Brakes are very good. Can be adjusted to the braking of your liking.

Depending on how old. You might not be able to get disc brakes. And for v's...I have no idea, I don't know anything about v brakes.

i would suggest a good set of v brakes. you really can't go wrong with v brakes especially for an older bike. I ride hyraulic disc brakes and i will never go to anything else. before i had the disc brakes i had the magura hydraulic rim brakes. little more stopping power than v brakes , but both are made for rim style braking.

V-brakes are an excellent choice but I relly like my Magura rim breaks. They stop faster than conventional brakes and have saved me from crashing in critical places. I only have one on the rear and use Ritchey cants on the front. Most of the stopping power on bikes, like cars, is in the front brakes. But applied too hard and it will send you flying over the bars. Maguras cost more than regular brakes and weigh more too. and because they are hydralic, they are toast if you spring a leak, which hasn't happened yet despite crash-testing.

I believe they are the same thing. Magura is one of the few companies that have hydo rim brakes.

Magura rim brakes look like a hydraulic version of the bmx pitbull brakes of the old days. You can get an optional quick-release for them which makes changing flats much easier. By looking at them you would'nt even think they are hydraulic except they are beefier than regular brakes. While conventional cantilever and long-arm cant v-brakes only pivot off of the frame studs, Maguras kinda push off of the frame. They come with two-finger levers and brake very smoothly.
