Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Wtf, Now its my turn to get hit by a car....

So in the past month I've been reading all the stories of you guys getting hit, Taking all the proper precautions even taking the lane I thought it would never happen to me. Guess I was WRONG. About an hour ago i was going out for my daily ride http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/ca/lynwood/781128176313926694 And its a 25-30mpg zone and the lanes are fairly narrow but i take the lane as i can usually keep up with traffic but if i get gassed, or people are speeding and impatient(as most are) i pull a to the right and let them pass. Anyways so im pacing behind a car going around 27 im about 8-10 ft behind him when he abruptly makes a right hand turn in front of me failing to signal or even slow down. I slapped on my brake and flew over my handle bars, however im okay and so is my kilo just gonna need some new bar tape. About 1 minute later a sherrif came out of nowhere and asked me, "Did what i think just happen happen" then I explain to him what happend and he checks my bike, im guessing he ride because he was making sure the wheels were true and everything was in working order which it was, Info was exchanged and we were both on our way. Only thinkg hurt was my elbow got a lil scrapped but overall ok. Moral of the story you can never be to safe, and drivers are unpredictable. Btw a helemt didn't save my life my brakes did :p

I have similar situation happened to me. But interestingly it is a bicycle. The bike was speeding by me, and all a sudden he decide to make a right right in front of me without checking my location. And i pull my brake as much as i can. But i still slam to the bike in front of me with about 5mph or so, it was all good and all. So i didn't exchange info. But within another 5 min of riding, my rear wheel pops out. The bearing failed. And i have to chuck the bike because it cost more to repair than buying a bike.

So glad to hear you're ok... and that someone with authority witnessed! Ice that elbow...

You tailgated a car with not enough room to brake in case of a sudden stop. You also don't know how to properly use your front brakes so you dont go over the bars.

If my understanding is correct. The car in front of you on the left lane suddenly decided to make a right turn. if that's the case. I don't think there is anything wrong with the rider.

But of course, there may be cases in which the rider could be tailgating, but i think anyone with any reasonable riding sense knows not to do it.

Yeah I don't think 8-10 feet is a sufficient distance behind a car. Especially not at those speeds. But what matters is you are okay. Just be more careful.

don't draft cars, too many clueless drivers out there. If you were to rear end a car it will be your fault for not keeping a safe distance behind.At least the cop stopped for you. They say they're working to look out for cyclists more, I hope this is a result and not just a cop that also rides (not that that's a bad thing)

I wasn't directly behind the car i was to the right because there were cars behind me but I always merge to take the whole lane when there are intersections to avoid being blind sided which is what i was doing, so as i started to merge he made the turn without slowing down and then i clipped his rear tire and flew off my bike.

@Hairnet wow now thats a gnarly wreck no contest that your male appendage is larger than mine if yo made it out of that :) And technically yea i guess i ran into car :P

But yea i definetly am going to keep a safer distance from now on I try to keep up due to so many drivers passing unsafely.

And @amull if you were in the situation im sure you wouldn't have time to "ease" the stop, just saying its easy to talk when it doesn't happen to you.

But to be honest I guess there was negligence on both parts.

It's not easing to a stop; it's shifting your weight back as you yank on the front brake

if you look to the right you'll see one guy (rabobank) with his stomach on the seat and slowing in time to not run over the guys right in front of him (1:00) At 0:33 you can see from overhead how little time and distance he has to avoid crashing in a pro sprint

Practice this, it will come in handy the next time some one decides to ignore you and make the left turn anyway :P

The biker is more at fault than the pedestrian. Going the wrong way on a one way street paying more attention to his video camera than his surroundings. Granted the bald guy came out of no where, but who uses cross walks anyway?

Unfortunately I still can't put any weight on my left shoulder or raise my arm without pain. I'm on muscle relaxants but they're not really helping so I'm thinking there might be some joint damage. I have an ultrasound booked on September 2nd to try and figure out what's up.

I've already ordered a replacement frame for the Kilo (a black Kilo Deluxe from Bikeisland). It should be here next week. I'll have the new bike built up soon. It'll be good to not have a busted up bike in the living room all day. Sadly I dont think I'll be getting any more riding in this season.

I think the pedestrian is a bit more at fault since you should look both directions regardless, i do it with one way streets, you never know. The cyclist seems like he should've seen the guy earlier than he did, maybe was looking somewhere else.

I had such a situation in france, i was going the right way on a one way street, between some stopped buses and all of a sudden a cyclists crossing the street on his bike pops out in front of the bus, barely stopped with a few cm left and my rear tire lifting off the ground. Was so pissed at the guy, but from there on, whenever i'm passing stopped cars, be it in traffic or parked, i try to ride so i can either see if anyone is coming (so i take the lane), or ride slow enough expecting something to pop in front of me.

I found it hilarious how each one stands up, and then simply announces what the other did wrong. Then, well whatever, see ya.

but the driver didn't use his blinker, i'm pretty sure if he had signaled correctly this would have never happened, there's no way you can pin this on the cyclist.

Sheldon Brown has more good info on this. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brakturn.html Brace your arms and shift back, the front brake should be the only brake you need and you shouldn't end up over the handlebars.

Rude, gald your OK. My ride takes me over simular high traffic roads. The sudden right turn without a signal happens fequently. It's amazing how people will exceed the speed limit pass only to make a fast right turn! Nothing you can do about it.

I've learned to make eye contact, particularly with those turning unto the road, seems to make them think twice before pulling out.

I'm surprised the police officer didn't ticket the driver?
