Foo - Broken Bones

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Another thread gave me this idea. Maybe it's been done before but I've never seen and the search didn't give me any good feedback.
Which bones have you broken throughout your life? What were you doing? Tell me your stories of broken bones, cycling related or not.
I'm currently recovering from a broken metacarpal in my right hand. I've also broken my tailbone and my left wrist twice. None of them involved a bicycle.

Broken wrist from a four car accident, broken wrist again (same one) from going against a 260lb guy in Martial Arts, broken ankle from same guy in Martial Arts both done with illegal moves. Broken nose.
With the broken wrist from the guy I kept fighting because I didn't want him to know he got me. I'm sure the Sensei saw the illegal move because when I ended up getting him where it counts (pays to wear a safety cup!) he didn't stop the fight. I also got him later on the floor in a side head lock with my thighs to cut the blood flow. He refused to tap out so he passed out instead.
The broken ankle he did an illegal side kick down on the side of my ankle and I fell to the ground after I heard the pop. He tried to get me in a body pin but I saw his huge self coming down so I rolled off but a shock of pain hit me and that distracted me so I didn't complete the roll. He landed on my knee that was sticking up and knocked the air out of himself.
Broken nose. Got popped in the face while getting robbed. Due to swelling, had to wait for it to go down in order to set it right. Had to be rebroken to set it properly.
Let me know when you want to talk about cuts. I got some stories to tell. :)

Right tibia. Skiing. Somebody skied across the back of my skis and the right binding released. Attempted a short "hockey stop" on the left ski and went down on sheer blue ice... with a rock the size of a mailbox unfortunately sticking out. Ha to suffer through the embarassment of being taken down the mountain on "the sled" and then to the hospital. Was out of action for about 12 weeks. Loooong time ago but still have the "S" shaped Frankenstein-esque scar on my right leg.

Broken nose.
It was a dark, rainy night ... no really, it was. I had left my sweetie at the entrance to the mall so I could get the car and pick her up. Tried to do the chivalrous thing. It was pouring so I ran across the parking lot, not seeing a chain 18 inches off the ground in front of me. You know the rest ... hit the chain and instantly did a face plant. I managed to get into the car and drive to the mall entrance where my then girlfriend was waiting. That's when I found out I had broken my nose. Apparently I was quite the sight with my nose slightly off to one side and blood all over. But that wasn't the worst part ... I had an interview the next day for a job that I really wanted. Long story short, married the girl, got the job and have a slight bump on my nose.
I've never broken any bones in my body at all.
I'm not going to participate in this thread because I don't want to break any bones within the next few days.

Broke a chip of bone off the one that protrudes on the inside of the ankle back in 5th grade. Was wrestling with my cousin and he flipped me. My ankle landed on the edge of a brick staircase.
Broke the arm in 7th grade playing soccer. Was the goalie. Going for the ball, should have let it go. It was outside the net, I caught the ball and then my arm hit the post.

Broken right wrist in a MTB crash (crushed end of radius, chipped the ulna, cracked the navicular).
Broken right arm in road bike crash (sheared the end off the humerus by the shoulder).
Broke my ____ bone in tomorrow's race (http://www.midwestsportsevents.com/racethelake.html)...my first road race. Said bone will be miraculously healed with liberal application of cold beer.
Ankle, in January... Ran for a streetcar on a VERY slippery morning. It was that super slushy not-quite-snow-not-quite-water stuff that's absolutely deadly, coating the ground. I was wearing flat soled shoes with almost no tread left on them, because I'm an idiot and decided not to turn back for my boots when I left that morning, didn't have a chance. To top it off, I was only carrying one thing - brown liquor store bag - when I took the fall. Nobody stopped to help because, I realize now, they all saw this bag. Really, it was a Chimay Grande Reserve - a very nice Belgian ale I picked up at a liquor store I don't often get the chance to go to. Looked like a 40oz liquor bottle through the bag though, and this was all at around 10am. Also had to go through the emergency room with that bag in hand, even got stopped on the way in - "That's not open, is it?" I had to walk a bit on the ankle too - managed to get to the streetcar after the fall, had to transfer to another streetcar to get up to the hospital but instead hailed a cab - which stopped half a block away. Most painful walk ever. It was so swollen by the time I got to the hospital that I had to wait 2 weeks for surgery.

Got back on the bike in May and am at 100% again now, except for occasional tightness in my Achilles. Went skydiving a couple weeks ago, my surgeon loved that.

In 1996, I crashed one of my MTBs. I skidded on some gravel, could not unclip due to sticky cleats, and toppled over onto my left side, landing on my left hip and elbow. I fractured my left femoral neck and still have three pins in my hip. I now have platform pedals on all six bicycles.

Senior in HS. Playing soccer in gym class, I kicked the ball and my opponent kicked where the ball just was and broke my toe.
About ten years ago in a church league softball game. I was on first and a ball was hit hard, on the ground to right field. Rounding second I did not hear a cue from the coach, but I thought I should have time to make it. There was a play at third and I slid feet first. The overweight third baseman stepped on my hand, breaking my wrist. But I did score on the next play.
This Jan, descending a hill in the dark (yes, I had lights), hit an object I did not see which sent my bike one way and me the other. I suffered a concussion and broken clavicle. I haven't been riding regularly since then.

I had my right ulna shortened. I have a four inch plate in my arm.
Had one and a half right metacarpals removed.
Fractured a thoracic vertebra and a couple of ribs.
Both of my feet have been crushed with resultant assorted fractures.
My nose was broken by one of my horses. I set it myself.
I play with large animals and I fall kinda hard.

Broke my ankle when I was 12. I slipped on some wet grass and fell into a ditch at day camp. The councelor told me to stop whining and made me walk the kilometer to the ferry to get home at the end of the day. When my mom picked me up at the end of the day, she wasn't happy to see me with a swollen ankle and no ice in sight. Taxi ride to Sick Kids Hospital and a long wait but at least I was given a bag of ice for the swelling (and a grape popsicle for being a trooper about the walk and the pain). Went home with a cast and stuck at home for the rest of the summer. The next day my mom called the camp and they denied knowing about my getting hurt at camp. The director said if was hurt, they would have taken me to the hospital but I remember the councelor telling me to shut up and refused to give me first aid and a bag of ice. Mom was hissing mad and I didn't go back even though I was off the crutches after a few days. It was so boring being stuck at home. It didn't help that my mom treated my broken ankle like it could kill me.
At least it was neat when the tech cut the cast away. And I got another grape popsicle -- highlight of the whole summer.

Oh. Right.
<Sigh> OK then.
1. Age 8 or thereabouts, broke a bone in my foot jumping out of a tree
2. Age 15, got my nose broken by a head butt from a skinhead who didn't like the 'peace' badge on my lapel. Manchester, England. Bent my nose to the right.
3. Age 19, got my nose broken again, by a cricket ball to the face. Bent my nose to the left. It would have been nice if the second break had straightened it out. But it didn't.
Since then, the ol' bones have remained remarkably break free, despite many falls, accidents, bike crashes and the like. I did once spend 4 hours in an Emergency Room having gravel dug out of my skin by a delightfully charming nurse. She told me that during her 20 years in the trade, mine were the worst injuries she'd see on someone who hadn't broken a bone.

Broke my collar bone when I was 15.
Was riding down hill, on a sidewalk, at night and a pick up truck pulled out of a parking lot and I slammed right into the side of it. If I had been taught proper cycling at an earlier age, I wouldn't have had to learn it the hard way.
Broken right pinky, the result of being hit by a car at an intersection(while riding). This was about 7 years ago...the broken pinky was really the result of the fall, not being hit.
Broken left toe, the result of smashing it into the the sofa leg. This was just a few months ago. I'd been vacuuming, moved the sofa....lol. Totally stupid.

I broke my toe when I was six riding a bike barefoot.
Haven't broken another, even racing BMX, XC, DH, water and snow skiing, snowboarding (very badly) and crashing a motorcycle into a Cadillac.
Now, stitches are another thing entirely.

Left wrist, riding, then again in martial arts about two seconds into the fight. I won that damn fight too.
1. Cracked a rib in '92, wrestling in my living room; still can feel the ridge in the bone.
2. Left wrist in '01, got bucked off my bike on a sinfully small kicker. Wore a bowler's metal wrist brace for two weeks.
3. Right wrist in '05, bouncing off the hood of a Corvette coming the wrong way out of an alley. SEVEN WEEKS IN A CAST, WTF!?!
4. Right c-bone in multiple pieces in '08 -- too much disc brake, too much standing up, not enough fork spring. Seven weeks off work....
5. Left ankle last winter -- was broken and mostly healed before the X-rays found it; missed 3 days work, rode on it for 4 weeks.

4th toe on right foot - smashed during Tae Kwon Do class when I was taking down a guy and he stepped on it and squashed it. I didn't realize it was broken so I did a 21 mile racewalk the next weekend. I realized it was broken after that. :(
Pinky toe on right foot - smacked into coffee table as I was walking across the living room to put my walking shoes on. Went for a 5 mile racewalk right afterward and had to turn around after about 1.5 miles because it hurt so bad. When I got home and took off my shoe, the toe was swollen about twice the size and lovely shades of purple and red.

One thing I learned from this thread is martial arts are dangerous :(
I broke my left arm in three places when my older brother and I thought it would be fun to ride in a shopping cart down a hill, oh it was fun too, till the very end.
Broke 3 ribs when I got hit by a car.
Cracked my shin in a cave in Mexico when while walking the person in front of me turned around to say something and blinded me with his lamp (big caving no no) and I slipped off a ledge.

Here's another one for karate. I broke or badly bruised a couple of ribs while sparing a black belt in Kung Fu. The rest of times I've been ludkier.
Broke my wrist skating in 5th grade. If it had happened today I'd be a rich man because I tripped over some ripped up carpet at the rink, and then one of their employees first laughed at me then yelled at me to get up. Both bones. Set and reset after xrays, no pain meds either time (doctor said they didn't have time to administer), and had it not been right after the second try they were going to open the arm up and use pins. 5 months in a cast, another 2 in a removable.
Fractured same wrist 3 years later when I went over the handle bars.
Broke (shattered) finger playing high school football. The finger was bent back and the weight of me and 2 guys tackling me landed on it, but at least I didn't fumble. I did however run straight to the sideline and dunk my hand ice. The trainer said I just jammed it of course lol. Had it surgically taken apart and reconstructed. Lots of PT just for a pinkie. Still not fully functional, but at least I got to keep the screws after they removed them.
Bruised sternum (not a break but painful) playing football. Broken toe, cracked ribs, disk bulges, sprains, etc. while in Marines. Not necessarily breaks, but skeletal related injuries.

When did yours happen? Mine was 17th July. As far as we can tell, my hand ended up in my wifes front wheel after rear-ending her. No scrapes on it (they were all on my right forearm and knee) and some black brake dust on my hand.
Split cast now, and 2 more weeks before they take another look at it.

Damn dude. You can tell from my xray it wasn't nearly as bad. It sure sucks only having one hand though! I did mine June 29th. The bone is pretty much welded back together but it's shifted and my hand isn't the same shape anymore. I avoided having any metal put in. The worst part isn't the broken bone, it's after the cast comes off and you have no flexibility or strength. I can't make a fist or hold onto anything heavy because the soft tissue atrophied. And, like an idiot, I went to a race yesterday totally forgetting that my skin would be sensitive after being covered up for 10 weeks. I burned the **** out of it!

Not nearly as bad as some of you have had it, but two weeks ago I broke my right collarbone and two right ribs. A cute girl in a hatchback drove into my bike at a perpendicular angle and I "flew" over the hood of her car.
- Smashed my left elbow when I was 5: play fighting with my best friend and fell off a small platform and landed on my arm. It was later in the day before I went to the hospital. funny thing was that mum was in the same hospital for something else. they had to put a 4 inch nail and 4 inch screw in to rebuild it. the double cast was really, really annoying in the height of summer.
- Radial head fracture of my right elbow a few years ago. my first clipless pedal pratfall. at a red light in peak hour traffic no less. biking the remainder of the way to work was fun.
- Cracked a rib when I got doored a couple of years ago. this hurt more than than both elbows.

as a kid I fell into a basement while playing in an abandoned house and broke both my wrist. I broke a bone in my right foot when I kicked my daugters bedroom door off the hinges (long story) a few days before starting the Philadelphia Fire Acadamy and did PT (including jogging) every day without fail. I rebroke the same bone while responding to a run a year after I was on the job. I broke a few ribs on my right side when I fell off my MTB when I was on vaca from the Fire Dept then rebroke them while responding to a run when I got back to work. Oh yeah, when I was a kid I thought I was The Hulk and was always trying to break ****, one day (right after watching the Hulk series on tv) I ran to the school yard that used to be across the street from my house and started yanking on a loose rought iron bar on the school yard fence, I was trying my best to break that thing and was yanking it hard towrds my face! LOL! After a few good yanks I broke it and it wacked me full force across the bridge of my nose. I was out of school for a few weeks with broken face bones including the nose. I looked like a freakin' racoon! LOL!

My medical record is sky high. hah.
I've broken almost everything. I was very accident prone and I did gymnastics for a very long time.
I tore my ACL (left leg) 4 times. Broken my nose on the balance beam. dislocated both of my shoulders when I did rhythmic gymnastics.
Had my patella slide down my tibia :/ broke both my left and right ankle once from landing wrong from doing a flyaway in gymnastics, another from playing basketball with my brother, running in the dark and didn't see a pothole, landing wrong from a dismount on the beam and other was just doing a split leap on the floor. Broke my wrist falling down the stairs. Kicked in the ribs and broke my collar bone when I went snowboarding. broke my pinky from gymnastics.
i think I'm just bad luck or something. hah.

My wife got a hairline ankle fracture in June, I broke my hand in July, my niece jumped off a wall in August and my sister broke her toe in September. My sister is 4th Dan in karate. She kicked the couch, and her toe looks like my hand bone did - the two fractures at an angle leaving the triangle piece.

1) A finger from a motorcycle crash(unwanted/unexpected willie).
2) The 5th Metatarsal. I was walking, then I fell.
and, do herniated disks count? if so...
3) C4-C5 herniated by 1.3cm (i think, can't remember all the details, drugs were too good).

If you get the plating you feel better the moment you wake up.
Healing takes a while but it's better than the constant tingle-shock running the length of your arm.

Had part of my collar bone removed during shoulder reconstructive surgery. Fell off my bike at an alarmingly slow speed, which led to a series of surgeries to repair a bankart lesion in my shoulder, including the repair and re- attachment of the cartilage in my shoulder socket, removing part of my collar bone to prevent impingement, and cutting tendons and ligaments in half, overlapping them, and then sewing them back together to shorten them.

Possible broken ribs. Possible broken fingers (one pretty sure).
Only one broken finger properly diagnosed. A bit funny because I only know within a 1 hour and 40 minutes window when I did it. I know it was fine when I started teh Rugby match and I know it was swollen when I walked inside and untied my boots. That one got properly diagnosed becaseu I then walked across the hall to the training quarters and asked for a frozen ice cup to ice it down. Next thing I knew I had an appointment with the orthapedist. The funny part there was after they had splinted it and givene me my instructions and I asked what I should do for next weeks match. They said 'Why didn't you tell us you were one of those, tape it to the finger next to it.

None of the stories were particularly interesting - mostly sports related.
