Sore from a full days worth of yard work my first 6 miles this morning was quite painful in the hips and butt. I had also tried raising my seat a bit or so on my last ride.
After the 6 miles I lowered the seat about 1/8" or so. From that point on there was no pain. I rode a total of 25 miles.
Would that small of an adjustment make that much difference or did I just happen to work through the pain at that point?

Too much grease and a harsh road bump caused my post to slip 1/8" one time. I didn't know the post had slipped so I kept riding. For the rest of my ride I felt sluggish, like I was pedaling harder than usual. Your experience sounds more dramatic than mine, but I do think that tiny differences in seat position can have large effect.

Both height and horizontal seat position make huge difference on both efficency and comfort. And then theres stem & bar positions... And the feet positions on pedals... To be honest, bad weather when riding can make my whole body ache...:)
