Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My son has shown great interest in starting BMX riding. However he has done his before and then backed off quickly. He is 11, I spoke with someone in an actual bike shop and he said he would build me a bike for him for around 300. I've come to learn that is about standard but I don't want to make such a large investment in something he may decide to do only 1 or 2 times. With that said I've noticed many toy stores sale "BMX" bikes for under 100 realizing there probably crap are they at least good enough to allow him to compete and see if its something he wants to do? Also what else would he need to participate as far as pads and helmet are concerned. Any help is appreciated the guy I spoke with at the shop would basically go no further than trying to sell me what he had to offer and wouldn't field these questions.

Well, if you got him the 300 dollar bike then sold it for 200 after he decides he's done with it you'd still only be out 100 bucks. Even if he doesn't race much he might till really enjoy the bike to ride around on. Keep in mind, a sweet bike is the coolest gift ever.
