KTVU TV news this evening had a story about a bike theft in Danville this morning. Someone stole a pickup truck and drove it through the front window of a bike shop in Danville. He was planning to load it up with stolen bikes, but the truck got stuck in the store window. The thief had to settle for stealing a single bike. Since the bike did not have pedals installed, he had to run off on foot. If you see a Giant time trial bike for sale cheap somewhere, call the Danville police.

FWIW, read that a guy was arrested the other day when a guy saw his stolen bike for sale (not sure if ebay or craigslist) and notified the police. Police got a warrent to search his apartment and found a bunch of other bikes, presumably all stolen. I think this was in Pleasanton.
While I'm sure there are some crimes of opportunity, I'm convinced that most bike thefts are from guys doing this for a living, like this loser.

Man - seems like a tough way to earn a living. Might as well get a real job.

Man - seems like a tough way to earn a living. Might as well get a real job. The problem often is that we lock up young people for minor crimes, which makes it much more difficult for them to compete against other Americans and illegals.

Yeah, let's not lock them up unless it's a biggie like murder. Let's teach them there's no consequences for the minor stuff. That'll discourage them and others from continuing.
