Just before my fiftieth, I decided it was now or never to take up cycling. I knew I wasn't getting any younger, and the body felt creaky. I am particularly interested of hearing from those my age and older about their touring experiences, and dealing with the aging body. It is amazing how much younger I feel after four years of cycling! Began some modest touring this summer, with a one night two day trip, then two nights three days, that took me to Cornwall Ontario/Masena, NY, then along the St. Lawrence to Ogdensburg, and back to Ottawa, a total of 325 kilometers. My only regret is that I didn't start this many years ago. I must admit that I am currently recovering from an overuse injury, having pulled my achilles tendon. I believe it was because I had my seat adjust too high. It has only inspired me more, however, as I have gone to physio, am learning new exercises, and doing what I can at the gym to rejuvenate and heal. My goal for next summer is to cycle around Lake Ontario. Most importantly though, I believe I must ensure that I pace myself. It is essential that I do what I can to avoid re-injury. I simply love touring to much to put myself out of commission like I have been the last few weeks. To put it simply, I just love seeing the world from the seat of my bicycle, and hope to see a lot more of it. Every time I read another cycling tourist story, I want to go there.
