How do I clean my shoes?

I got caught in 2 unexpected downpours without my shoe covers today. Now my shoes smell so bad I can't stand to be in the room with them!

How bad do they smell?

They make my entire 2-car garage stink
They smell like a horse's stall

To quote the kid in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, "I wanted to run away...but you can't run away from your feet."

OK, so maybe they needed to be cleaned before the downpours. :innocent:

My wife won't let me wash them in the laundry--she's convinced that if they're that loud in the tumbler they must be damaging something. So...how do I wash these things???

You get a bucket, some soap and to quote a favorite movie of mine "you plunge and scrub"

Now tell me you like me hat!

Take out the inserts and wash or replace those. After that it depends what kind of shoes they are as far as how you clean them.

Mine smelled after riding 60 miles in the rain and the mistake of letting them dry overnight without cleaning them.
Solution: washed the inserts, washed the shoes under running water until the water runoff was clear, then stuffed them with newspapers. The next day the smell was mostly gone.

Soak them in a bucket with Oxyclean and/or Simple Green then scrub the insoles or replace them.

You guys all like to do it tough!

Take out the inserts, put washing powerder in the washing machine, put shoes in washing machine, run washing machine.

Take shoes out.

Best to put the powder in the machine first, I have got it inside the shoe a couple of times, and if it gets just a bit wet it can cake and then wont dissolve in the wash, leaving you with mortar inside :)

Since the wife won't let you use your washing machine, why not grab a good book and head to the laundrymat? Depending on your life experience it'll either bring back old memories or be a spectacular adventure.

This one wins the award for "Suggestion I'm going to use", but this:

wins the award for, "Reply that made me laugh the most." Ah, yes, laundromat memories...

Baking soda's good for absorbing odors, too...

Laundrymat. It's the best place to wash anything you wouldn't / shouldn't wash at home. This is also the reason no one wants to use them as their primary way to wash clothes.

My shoes would only smell if I wear the wrong socks. Wear smart wool (or similar) and your shoes will never smell again!! Trust me on this one.
