I just shipped all four of my locks out with the prepaid label. I'm pretty happy about this, I have a NY lock,a NY chain, a mini, and an evolution lock. That's one heavy box!
But still, locks are for honest people or non pros. Every fire department has lots of tools to cut locks. They have to get into locked burning buildings.

Does anybody know if this works on ALL Kryptonite locks? I bought mine over 30 years ago when they first came out. It reads Kryptonite Bike Lock 3 PATENTS PENDING KBL CORP. The tumblers were made by Pundra. At least Pundra is stamped on the tumblers.
I tried to get a pen in my lock and it just won't go. I tried heating it to soften it to see if it will stretch over the inside part and it still won't go. I am afraid that if I do get a pen in there it will break or jam the lock as has happened to other posters.

Go to Kryptonite's website and register to have your lock exchanged. If you don't try to pick it someone else might. so you might as well get a free new lock

Yeah, I play alto. Coltrane is (I guess you could say) my idol. His music and spirituality are definitely worth looking up to. Are you a Trane fan? You're only the second person to recognize him here, by the way.

Well, my replacement lock (a New York 3000 STD) arrived today via UPS. Turnaround time was two days shy of seven weeks. However, considering that I registered on the day that the replacement program was announced, the total wait was five-and-a-half months. I'm not complaining, though, because the new NY Lock is worth the wait. It makes the old NY Lock look positively flimsy in comparison.
I was surprised to see that my lock is retail-packaged after reading other posters describing their locks arriving in generic packaging and without accessories (e.g. documentation, bracket, shims, nuts & bolts, etc.). The NY Lock 3000 retail package contains the lock, EZ Mount bracket with mounting hardware, three uniquely-numbered keys (including one with a little LED flashlight embedded in it! :D), and documentation.
All in all, I'm quite happy with it. :)
Just got my UPS label yesterday. Gonna send 'er off tommorrow. I'll report back when the new one arrives.

I shipped out my locks 2-18-05 I got a box return today 3-2-05. About 12 days.
I got a new NY Lock ,Mini Evolution, and a Long shackle Evolution. My lock for the NY chain is on backorder, but I do have a packing slip that says it is on backorder. At least I have paperwork showing that they owe it to me. I think this is pretty good so far. In the end I will have A couple hundred $ of new locks. There are some minor improvements on the locks, beside just a different key.

I registered when? When did registration start, regardless, they sent me my package to return the lock back on Jan 31, and I received it Feb 20th, well it could have been earlier, I was on vacation.
Thanks Krypto, at least you're doing something...
Anyone who would like to purchase two MEC locks let me know, they're going cheap...
Just got my big ol' lock...and no mounting hardware! Damn!
Why didn't keep your old hardware?
Why didn't keep your old hardware?
No doubt all they needed was the lock and A key
Why didn't keep your old hardware?
I did, but I had an Avenir that had a thicker barrel than the new one, so no matter how tight I turn the cheap-o screw in the cheap-o piece of plastic, I can't make it small enough. Do you think its worth calling Krypto to ask for a new bracket?

Yes. They should make brackets which fit the new locks.

Yes. They should make brackets which fit the new locks.
I have four new Krypto locks. Only the replacement NY lock came with a very nice improved bike bracket. I'm guessing they are working on adapters for all the locks to fit the new bracket.
The part that attaches onto the lock shackle is metal and is held in place with a set screw. The lock does not have to be unlocked to get it in or out. It snaps in with a latch and you push a button to get it out. It will speed up locking and unlocking. It seems pretty sturdy too.

Yes, circular key - the diameter of the pen has to match that of your key.
So... Your Saying If I Bought A Kryptonite lock, i could take the key and unlock other bikes? why dont peaple jus do what i do, buy some think chain or think bike wire cord, and use a pad lock? their only like 7$? it makes no sense, and i barley ever lock my bike up, only at whistler and stuff

guess what its not just the lovely kriptonite (yeah i spelt it wrong but a manufacturer like that does not desevre me spending my time finding out how to spell it properly) that can be unlocked with a pen. my PMD bike lock, was undone aswell! took me a few minutes but as the pen which was to tight fit got worn down it got to be the exact fit, not the dam thing works like a key, 2 seconds to lock or unlock it. Looks like a definite no for U locks, well you seem to call them U locks in the UK they are called D locks.
The new flat key locks work well. If you buy a U/D lock just be sure the keyhole is flat, and you'll be okay.

its just astonishing how a type of lock used so commenly on bike locks so so easily pickable. You would think that they put more research in to it. Some of these locks are very pricey, yet i would expect better then this from the chepeast of locks. A lock will not stop a professinal theif for long but to think that out of a bunch of guys with no experince at this with a few minutes of trying many of not most of us got it undone, thats very bad.

That would mean that the COUNTLESS other manufacturers would have had to have doen the same research. Be glad Kryptonite is actually doing something about it as opposed to those jerks at Master Lock

I'm quite annoyed that Kryptonite didn't even reply to a polite email requesting a status update (which I sent on the 14th).
That makes it 4 months since I submitted my application for replacement cylinder, and 4 months since I've had any contact from them (hah, not even an automated email). Now I'm getting annoyed with them.
Woohoo! Making noise worked!
Allegedly my first application resulted in labels being sent out. Never received. Right...
So mailing letters and grumble got me a mail from a guy called Steve who claimed to have posted out new UPS labels - true - got them 4 days later. Sent back that day.
Fast forward 4 weeks - I now have a beautiful orange and black Kryptonite Evolution.
Thanks to Kryptonite, I'll be recommending them in future.

well i just found out about the pen trick, seems my CCM 18mmX80cm cable lock was vulnerable to it aswell, cause of the circular key, not as easy as in some of the video's but, none the less once i got it in there and turned the lock pop'ed open. I must have broken something off inside too cause now it's stuck in "unlock" mode. Good motivation to get a new lock i guess, since i have to work tomorow evening. :(

The April "Cycling Plus" bike lock tests show that crooks have better and faster methods than a BIC pen, methods that can open a cable lock in two seconds, a cheap U-lock in five seconds, and a superior quality lock in under three minutes. A crook does not need to get down on his hands and knees and fiddle around with a box of pens to see if one MIGHT (or might not) work on a given model of lock (while looking over his shoulder for the bike's irate owner).
By the way, the best lock in the "Cycling Plus" tests was the Kryptonite New York U-lock. It can stop a well-equipped Pro, using power tools, for over ten minutes, compared with about two minutes for some of the "leading" locks. So, put a New York lock around the rear wheel (next to the seat tube) and around a parking meter post, use a good mini U-lock to secure the front wheel to the frame, and just relax.

my dad just told me a story of a friend who watched his Harley speed by in the back of a truck.
He had locked it with a huge hexagonal chain and giant lock to a post bolted and concreted into the ground. The theives had just linked a tow chain to the locking chain and to the truck. Yanked hard with the truck...
the rider went to check on his bike and found a giant hole where his 20k bike was locked...
i don't worry about stopping every theif. Just the local ones.

I sent my locks off to Kryponite the other day and expect my new locks in a couple of weeks. My friend just got her new replacement lock after about two weeks of waiting. It seems like the replacement locks are cheaply made, but I guess that is just how kryponite locks are nowadays. The two locks I sent back are 5 and 14 years old.

I have a MegaLok by Kryptonite. Does anyone trying to open this? as I try with a bic pen but looks like the diameter for the lock is bigger than the others. I've tried to search online about information on this lock but I couldn't find any.

Thanks in advance.
Forgive me if it's already been answered but I just picked my Kryptonite MegaLok by hammering in the bic pen cap after I cut off the clip and turning it. I can't believe it!

So, im way too lazy to search through the 47 pages in this thread (sorry raiyn), but id like to know if anyone else has contacted Kryptonite with this problem..
The main reason i bought a Kryptonite was the Anti-Theft protection, as if my bike got stolen, i really havent the coin to replace it.. I signed up for the anti theft protection and sent in my $15 money order. Then i hear about this whole bic-lock thing, and sent my lock back to them and received the new lock, and now they are looking for $20 for a new anti-theft protection.. i emailed them a while ago (2 months) asking them if my old anti-theft protection carried over to my new lock, and only received a reply a couple of days ago that really didnt answer the question, i emailed them back and they told me to call their customer service department. ive called them many times in the past few months have NEVER gotten through to talking to someone, have always been on hold..
So my question is, has anyone else thought about this, and how did they/you go about resolving it?
thanks..
PM me if you've had this concern..

I've not seen any specific information regarding your question. But, Kryptonite has always given its customers MORE than required by contract or law. So, if you have documentation that you paid the $15, I'd bet Kryptonite would honor the terms of THAT agreement.
But, read that agreement carefully. Collecting even a modest recovery requires a good deal of effort on your part. The agreement requires getting a police report, documenting the current value of the bike, documented what other insurance you have (such as home owner's insurance, renter's insurance) returning the damaged lock, etc., etc. etc. AND, you must prove that the bike was properly locked to a secure post, and that the crook broke the lock.
I was surprised to find out from a friend in the insurance business how extensive the coverage of home owner's insurance can be. For example, in some cases a parent's home owners insurance would cover a bike stolen from their child's dorm at college, or a bike stolen while their kid was on tour in Europe. If you have such coverage, you are excluding from collecting from Kryptonite.
And, the "current" value of many bikes is not a whole bunch. My 1988 Trek was (in 1988) one of the finest "production line" road bikes in the world. Currently, it has an E-Bay value of about $150. So, how many hoops would I jump through to collect $150?
Now, if I had a bike that was worth $3,000, and had a New York 3000 lock, it would be worthwhile to try to collect. But, the owner must prove that the bike was stolen because the lock got cut or broken by the crook. A crook is NOT going to break or cut a NY 3000. He will take the bike an easier way: cut the bike tube, cut the rack, or find a bike locked to "thin air". You don't collect a penny if you can't prove that the crook broke the lock, and the NY 3000 can't be broken by the average crook.
So, buying insurance on your Kryptonite lock is kinda like buying insurance against "snow damage" in Hawaii...a good deal for the insurance company...not such a good deal for the customer.
I heard about this a year ago and registered online. The website was a little messed up and I called Steve and informed him of the problem. It took about 4 months for them to send the UPS mailing labels, another month for me to send them back! ;) Once I sent them back I got my brand new lock in about a week.
Kryptonite is handling this whole thing in an upstanding kinda way. A little bit of goodwill goes a long way so I went out and purchased two Kryptonite "snakes" for my kid's Burley trailer.
Well, i'm impressed. I filled out the online form last week, got the shipping labels emailed to me within 48 hours, and yesterday the FedEx guy appeared with a package containing a brand new Kryptonite Evolution lock!
Cool, especially since my old EvoLite was quite a few years old and i'd lost one of the keys!!
Thanks Kryptonite! :)

I have already gotten five or six new locks through the exchange program. Then I was semi-organizing a friend's garage, so she will have more room to store some of my extra bikes. I found two of my old Kryptonite locks that I bought back around 1982. So, I registered them, and two week later was e-mailed the "return labels".
Kryptonite will get my locks back in a couple of days...I suspect that when their staff opens the boxes they may be surprised...I don't think many people have been sending back locks that are twenty-three years old.
I do not know of ANY company that has ever agreed to such a massive and generous product replacement. Can you imagine contacting Sony and asking for a "free" replacement for a twenty-three year old television?

I've gotten three new locks, and have been extremely pleased with their service. The first one took three weeks from contacting them initially to receiving the new lock, and the second two took two weeks total turnaround.
Got my replacement, but there is no way of attaching it to the bike. It doesn't have any attachment shackle/doohickey. (It also doesn't come with a lighted key, unlike the origina lock — not that this matters.) Oh well, I bought an OnGuard anyway.

make sure you buy a NEW lock from a reputable LBS, better to buy an expensive lock now then to save a few bucks and replace an expensive bike. Or you can do like some of the commuters in my neighborhood do (myself included) and ride such a massive pile of junk that no one in their right mind would take it. only putting $20 into a $25 dollar ride takes some of the sting out of getting robbed.

I've been a part of this forum for a few months now. I never checked out this topic, because I had heard else where about it, so I figured I didn't need to. Then I noticed the views . . . that's just unreal.
Oh, and to stay ontopic I guess . . . I have a kryptonyte lock with the barrell key. I bought a new one. It is nice. However, I tried to 'bic' my previous lock, to no avail. I don't understand. How can I be so bad at crime, while some neanderthal can be so good at it?
