Foo - Random Tech Question for the Residents of Foo

Figured I'd give this forum a shot before signing up at some tech-related discussion board.

I have some data- mostly text documents, a few pictures, about an album's worth of music, and a couple of medical records and legal/ID-related documents- that are important and/or irreplaceable to me. I've been storing them on a flash drive since I have a shared computer (roommate, no cash for one of my own). However, I've been forced to leave it behind when going out in anything to do with rain, water etc for fear of losing the data.

So lately I've been looking for waterproof, rugged and fairly small flash drives to store the stuff on. Even a 64MB or 128MB drive would be enough for what I would store on it, but it needs to be waterproof against rain/inclement weather, and also against submersion to probably 10ft and/or rugged enough to withstand breakage if I accidentally lay on it (reason being, it would be clipped next to the tag I wear around my neck, and I sometimes forget to take it off).

Which is about the right size and price, and though the data capacity is pretty low it looks like it's made well. If anyone could help out on finding this or something like it at a less obscure source (ie Ebay, Amazon, or an electronics store such as Fry's), free e-cookies. :lol:

Waterproof...maybe.....but I would not trust any of them to go though the washing machine. That is pricey for 64MB. :twitchy:

I hope your stuff is password protected. A CD might be a little more water resistant and a lockable filing cabinet or mini-safe wouldn't hurt. Safe deposit box?

You can also use an online data-backup service. There's numerous free ones if you have under 1gb data.

My stuff is password protected, currently I have the 'irreplacable' stuff on two seperate Sandisk Cruzer 2GB drives, one of which I keep in my wallet and the other in the large backpack I basically live out of.

I hadn't thought of online backup. Of course, security would be a major issue and a free backup service seems suspicious, why would anyone waste plenty of server space unless the person "had" to log on often and see ads, etc. And security during the file transfer, my roommate's not very good with computers in general but he learned how to call the ISP and trace history, so I'd have to send the files through a proxy, creating another layer of complication/security issues.

But they're a bit large for me to wear, and I've heard they have memory issues. Password protection might not be necessary if I'm wearing it round my neck, no one's going to mug me for a flash drive, but it needs to withstand some abuse and squashing to work that way.

try mozy.com. The home version is free up to 2GB of data, files are encrypted on the server. The business customers are basically paying for your share (mozy is owned by EMC). You may not get super fast download speeds for recovery, but the info will be safe.
