I'm not sure where this bracket (for a Philip's low-rider luggage rack) fits on the brake ("housing stop"?) boss on my long haul trucker. The brake is a an oryx cantilever. The screw that holds the brake on is tapered.

I've never heard of a Philip's rack and can't turn one up in a google search. A picture of the whole rack would help.

"Low rider" racks usually attach to the boss on the outside midway down your LHT fork, not the brake bolt.

"Housing stop" refers to the cable housing. Up above, off the stem, there's something that holds the end of the cable housing, that the cable core comes out of. That bracket is probably to hold the top of the rack to that stop.

it looks like that rack attaches to the brake fixing bolt. You need to unscrew the bolt that holds the brake to the frame and mount the rack there.

You'd need to loosen the bolt, take the brake off, slide the bracket over the brake boss then reinstall the brake.

Thanks , so the brake goes on last. If I had been brave enough to take the bake off I would have seen. I phoned the bike shop and they said the bracket went on last (I thought)?

You sure about that? Most of the cantilever mount racks I've seen go on after the brake. It seems the LBS agrees with me as well.

Take a lesson from these (http://www.paulcomp.com/rackadapter.html) modified brake bolts made to take a rack.

If he takes the brake off first and installs those mounts in behind then the return spring sleeve pin won't fit into the holes at the base of the brake bosses. So the rack brackets HAVE to go on just under the head of the bolts.

It sounds like I need a flat headed bolt. There is one with the rack but it looks a bit short compared with the present tapered one.

Velo Orange (http://www.velo-orange.com/cabrramobo.html) also makes a set of bolts that tighten the canti mount while allowing you to mount a rack on top of it.

I looked at picture, in #4 and thought it was to go on a suspension fork lower slider, due to low U bracket..

glad #11 came up next , confirming that...

doesn't look like it would last long if actually used off road ..

a suspension fork rack design from the minds that brought you the lead-cadmium painted toy..
load and vibration transferred to the mount for the brakes on front .. bad idea.

A regular type that has a mount to the fork tip eyelet is needed.

Old Man Mountain (http://www.oldmanmountain.com/Pages/RackPages/FrontRacks.html) has been making racks that attach to the brake mounts for years, and I've heard nothing but great things. Of course, they do look much better built than the aforementioned rack.
