I work in Queens, and I frequently ride my 2007 Sirrus LTD there. The route I ride most often is Flushing Meadows to Kissena to Cunningham to Alley Pond (the four parks strung together) via the Vanderbilt path. I'm sure you will enjoy your Sirrus as much as I do mine!

Why not join a club? New York Cycle Club doesn't have many rides in Queens, but you can post to the discussion board and I'll bet you'll get some responses. Five Borough Bicycle Club has rides to Queens once in a while, but they have a pretty inactive discussion board. Check out their websites and maybe you'll find something that fits.

Yah, this path is very fun. I tend to continue from Alley pond down the bike path towards Fort Totten, then take Utopia Parkway back to Kissena.

I live in Queens, Flushing to be precise. I would ride through all 4 parks too. And lately I have been going to Fort Totten. I try to go every morning as it's a short ride before work. I'm up for meeting and riding with people in Queens. I have a 85 Trek 400 Elance. I LOVE IT!!

This is what I'll do if I have some extra time in the morning.. If not I'll just go through all 4 parks.,,

When you get out of Kissena, take Booth Memorial towards 164th street and then take a right at Underhill Ave instead, there's a green way bike path a little ways ahead. Once you go along Underhill, you can go up over the bridge across the LIE and that will take you to the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway which is really fun to ride down. You seem to be going tangential to the VMP which is odd because the VMP is pretty much an awesome bike path :D

When you get to Fort Totten, if you actually go back the way you came(Yes a bit of an uphill climb), going from Alley pond down the rest of the VMP back towards Francis Lewis, you can go pretty darn fast since it's a nice downhill the majority of the way. Gotta be careful though because there are a lot of oblivious walkers/kids.

That's at least what I do usually. Lots of fun little hills and subsequent downhills! You might have your own reasons for taking the route that you do. Personally I try to stay out of the roads as much as possible, lots of wacky drivers around.

Anybody down for some intervals on weekdays? Like once or twice a week after 5pm?
Around Flushing Meadows (loop around Arthur Ashe Stadium).

I do like a few, get bored, and head home.
Be nice to have people to push each other on.

With daylight getting shorter, this would be good for those of us not equipped with lights.. Yesterday I did the 4 Parks / Vandy ride and did not get home until half an hour after dark.

I would be available to do after-work Flushing Meadows laps after Sept 23..

@vdek yeah I used to take that route early in the morning during weekdays. Until there were a lot of jobbers and people with dogs on leash wandering all over the bike path. I almost want to say traffic early in the morning was a little more manageable than people :)

Are any of you doing the Escape NY ride?

Nice! When the date draws nearer, we can get down the time/day. Hopefully by then, more people will have read this thread and have their interests kindled.

Very true about the days drawing shorter. Get in a good workout with some intervals before darkness falls.

Wow, looks like the tornado or microburst that walloped NYC yesterday did some damage to Flushing Meadows Park, though luckily most of the damage is confined to the southern side of the park only (Meadow Lake). Should be cleaned up over the weekend though, looks like.

Anyone up for an afternoon roll next Thursday? A few loops starting from the front gate of Arthur Ashe at 5PM sounds doable before twilight.

5:20 Thursday it is. I'll be there at the front gate of Arthur Ashe. I'm the guy with a black Specialzed Sirrus straight-bar road bike.

A 5:20 start will give us approximately 1.5 hours of daylight-- Next Thursday, the sun will be setting at 6:51PM according to the U.S. Naval Observatory: http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/astronomical-applications/data-services/rs-one-year-us

That might be enough time to do the 4 parks via the Vanderbilt and return to Flushing Meadows via the 73rd Avenue bike lane just after sunset.
