I was only 10, yet I remember the day clearly. My older brother, 14 at the time, cried. I won't ever forget that.

I saw him play a few times he was pretty good. I do remember the day, or was it the day after, pretty clearly, I was driving back form the state fair and flipped on the radio and it was SRV after SRV after SRV, I figured something had to be up by the time the DJ came back in w/ the update.

I tried to talk a friend into going to see him just a few weeks before he died but he was on a double bill w/ Joe Cocker that my friend did not want to deal with.

He had a show a few wks before he died at the Garden State Arts Center in NJ. He was the opening act and I don't remember who he opened for. My friends and I went to the show and could get all the way up close since he was not headlining. After he was done, we left.

We moved to Austin in '92 and I really feel like I missed on something. The first time I became aware of Stevie was when he played on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (I think?). I sat there mezmerized thinking "How does he play both rhythm and lead at the same time? And make it appear effortless?"

Some of the riffs in his cover of "Little Wing" give me chills to this day.

His statue on Town Lake in Austin became my "place of solitude" back in the early 2000's. Things were really bad and all I had was my MTB for exercise. I would ride the hike & bike trail and one day I just felt a pull to the statue. I wheeled up next it, grabbed the neck of his guitar (that points towards the heavens) and dropped my head and searched for guidance. I don't get down there as frequently these days but whenever I run or bike the trail, I still always grab that neck.

A friend and I were cycle touring and hadn't seen a newspaper for a couple of weeks. When we did, I noticed a reference to "The Eric Clapton helicopter crash". It wasn't until the following day we learned what had actually happened.

Which one? I was on the JFK on that day...had just got to the Med & Gulf for Desert Shield. I flew off in Dec '90...EAOS :thumb:

JFK... I was in VAQ-130. And effective Wednesday, the 1st, I'll be retired! :D

I was in ship's company (B-Div) so I probably resembled Gollum as I seldom saw daylight. Although once in a while I'd venture up and up to watch flight ops. Though I never saw SRV, he was one of many fine artists that kept me sane while deployed. I had a fair portion of my locker space taken up with cassettes.
