I'm searching for a cycling shoe that I can use during the winter. I think I want to get the Lake MXz302. I was reading on the 2008 batch and it looked like there were some problems with that batch with the heel becoming seperated from the sole.

So, my question is twofold. 1) Did the problem with the sole seperation get resolved with the 2009 / 2010 model. and how much bigger shoe size should one order to accomidate additional socks / hand warmer?

I ask this in the midst of summer as there is a pretty good deal on the shoe 25% off. Thanks.

I have a pair of 2008 MXZ302s. One heel separated in that first season, and the other has not. I had it fixed at a local shoe repair shop. Lake sent me a few spare BOAs in compensation. I'm happy.

When I bought mine, I was wearing size 46 three-season cycling shoes, so I ordered the Lakes in size 48 wide. It was after they arrived that I remembered I wore 46s because the three-season shoes didn't come in wide. My current three-season shoes are 45. I could probably go with 44 wide, and I will order Lakes in that size when I wear these out.

Knowing this now, I should have ordered the MXZ302s in 46 or 47, but the 48s are okay. The BOAs tighten the boots enough that their pontoon size isn't an issue, well, except for toe overlap with the fenders.

The Lakes are warm enough that I don't have to add extra socks until well down into the teens. Even then I use a second pair of my regular socks, not extra thick winter wooly socks.

All said, the Lakes seem to run true to size, so I would suggest you go with whatever size your current winter hiking boots are. These will be as warm or warmer than your winter hikers, so let that be your guide.

OK. I commute 20 miles each way. So, about 1:20. It seems in the past winters. So, would I need to plan on accomidating two pair of socks and hand warmers or 2 sizes bigger 47, or would one pair of socks be sufficient and one size bigger, 46. I wear 45 for 3 season.
