Alt Bike Culture - First Custom Bike Build

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello,
I have been collecting bikes for a while and my friend and I had always had an idea to chop some up and make some custom bike. Well, we got to it at about 9:00pm tonight and came up with better results that we expected to get. I personally don't know how to weld but two of my friends do. So equipped with a few tools including a saws-all and an oxy-Acetylene torch we got to work. We were working with three bikes which included an old Sears "free spirit", an unknown BMX frame, and a mountain bike from Wal-Mart or that type of thing. The wheels picture are not what we plan on using and we are going to angle the seat tube at the same angle that we made the headtube. Also we are going to extend the handle bar stem. Anyway hope you like where our first custom bike is headed and here are pictures. One of the other guys that was involved in this build is under the name Curtpnw on this forum.

Hello my name is Austin. I didn't really take many pictures after we started working but this shows what we started with. Excuse the absolutely terrible picture. At least you can see all three bikes that we had to begin with.

Yeah!! we need more strange custom bikes in the world, they're so much fun. Does it ride okay? Balanced enough and such?

We haven't had a seat or tires on it yet. While sitting on the frame and kicking around the bike seemed to do well. The bike balance and stand on its wheels. You can't really fit your feet on the pedals while sitting on the frame but the seat will be pushed up and backward quite a bit. The handlebars will be extended as well so hopefully it will be relatively comfortable to ride.

More progress. Still a few things to figure out, but it's closer to completion.

Did some more work on the bike last night. Got more acetylene for the welded and grabbed some filler rod so we didn't have to use metal coat hangers. Got the seat tube on and stable enough to sit on. Motopecane covered an old rusty sprung seat so that we could sit on it without cutting ourselves. Slowly but surely.

More progress has been made! We managed to get a chain on it last night and took it for a spin. The handlebars are not extended yet but you can riding if your folded in half. The chain rubs on the frame a bit, and the rear wheel is un-true but that is beside the point. IT LIVES! and for you viewing pleasure here is a video of it.

Schweeeet build. I just started checking this forum out and have been looking at Venice Motor Bikes in order to build a frame and stick a motor in it. Anybody have any experience with them. I was originally gonna use an old RM 65 motor. I am dying to build a frame and throw a motor in it that will do about 40mph or more. http://meechcustombikes.blogspot.com/

the only advice I can give you is if you want something that goes 40mph or faster DO NOT use a bike or even build one. Get yourself a moped or motorcycle. They are made from much thicker and larger diameter steel tube for a reason. Yes they are much heavier but it is for good reason and if it has a motor then it doesn't matter.
