Fifty Plus (50+) - Passed by 71yo on 10 spd Wearing Bikini

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Riding up the trail at a pretty good clip, I heard an old fashioned bell - not the "ting" of a current bell but the r-r-r-ing of a 1950's bell.

So passing me was a guy wearing only a bikini brief and biking shoes, going like heck on a 1950's 10 speed road bike! No padding, no chamois, no udder buttter. Just him, his black bikini brief and the saddle. The temp was about 67 degrees and it was windy.

I shouted to him as he passd, "Didn't I meet you last winter? Aren't you the guy from Franktown who is from England?" I have seen him in his bikini before, but this was the first time for a chat!

He slowed a bit so I could keep up with him, and we chatted a bit.

His name is John, he is 71yo, and he loves to ride and rebuild, and collect classic and vintage bikes. He rides about 12,000 miles per year, and typically rides 40 miles in a day. He used to be a pro bike racer.

He is going to Boston in October for a gathering of the US chapter of an English Bike club, and they will bike from pub to pub, having a jolly good time!

I gave him the Bikeforums.net URL, and he may join us.

He buys a lot of parts on EBay and builds bikes all the time. The one he was riding was a classic English bike from the 50's, although I can't remember the model. Had one of the derailleur shifters on the seat tube.

What an interesting time. We rode together several miles, and then we stopped at the gate and talked about 15 more minutes. He headed his way and I headed mine.

MORAL: YOU DON'T NEED A FANCY BIKE AND EXPENSIVE BIKING CLOTHES TO BE A GREAT RIDER!

But it does help to have a bikini brief and to be comfortable in your skin.

DnvrFox, you sure this wasn't shokhead in disguise?
(said in jest)

Seriously, I often stop to speak with 'older' folks. Some mighty fine folks.

That's a great story, but I'm not really surprised. Look at the roster (http://www.cyclingpros.com/Onyx0404.htm) for this year's Breathless Agony. At 43 years old, I'm 2 years younger that the average age. Two of the ~200 riders were over 70, 12 were 60+, and over 50 were over 50! We're talking about an extremely challenging ride, too.

This guy also did the "Ride the Rockies" a few years back, as did I.

He does centuries, etc.

I wonder how many old-timers there are like this? Coincidentally, we have an old guy, one of the regulars that we see on our "day-off" ride. Estimating his age, I'd say he's around 70, and he's rail thin and about 6'1" tall. Can't be more than 100 lbs. He rides an older "comfort" bike at a rather good pace - I'd say 14-15 mph. He has never had a shirt or long pants on. Always swim trunks.

I've never talked to him, so I don't have any idea about his riding habits or anything else about him for that matter, but we've seen him many, many times.

I hope I'm still iding that strong at that age!

I saw a guy yesterday riding an old commuter bike with no shirt on and shorts, I am going to start carring my camera around with me, there used to be a girl who was overweight and she started riding and as she lost weight, her clothes got skimpier and then one day she was perfect, everybody talked about her because she rode everywhere. What happened to her I will never know, she just stopped riding, I like to think she met her prince charming, married and moved away.
