Although I only did the 50 mile route, I still had a blast.
Met up with some friends from all over the country (one of my buddies is from ALASKA!) and had a great weekend.
Four of them competed in the WEE-CHI-TAW mtb ride Friday evening (with 3 of them on Cross Bikes!). Unfortunately, one guy crashed HARD, getting cuts on his arm, hip, and neck (the neck from his Road ID dog tag chain). Plus a nice head first meeting with a tree. I really thought his weekend was done, but he fought on and rode 100 the next day.
My 50 mile ride was pretty good. I went out WAY too hard in the beginning, losing my friends for about 10-12 miles. Somehow, I was chasing a jersey that I thought was a friend, but turned out to be someone else. That, plus getting stuck with some of the guys really hammering it (I don't go 25+mph normally!) put me ahead of my group for a long time.
I was thinking about doing the 100k, but at the 50 mile route turnoff, I split since my left hip had be bugging me the whole morning.
The 50 route gets lonely for a bit, until the 100k people join back up. Rest stops were perfect and well-manned with TONS of volunteers and more food/fuel than you could ever need. Although supporting roughly 14,000 riders must be quite the undertaking.
Near the end, the 25 mile route joins up with us (50mile/100k) and we head through Sheppard AFB...this was my favorite part. You get to go down the flight line, where they have some of the planes pulled out for you and pilots standing by to wave, take pictures, etc....then you get this:

So much fun and I hope to get back there next year and do the 100.
