Although I only did the 50 mile route, I still had a blast.

Met up with some friends from all over the country (one of my buddies is from ALASKA!) and had a great weekend.

Four of them competed in the WEE-CHI-TAW mtb ride Friday evening (with 3 of them on Cross Bikes!). Unfortunately, one guy crashed HARD, getting cuts on his arm, hip, and neck (the neck from his Road ID dog tag chain). Plus a nice head first meeting with a tree. I really thought his weekend was done, but he fought on and rode 100 the next day.

My 50 mile ride was pretty good. I went out WAY too hard in the beginning, losing my friends for about 10-12 miles. Somehow, I was chasing a jersey that I thought was a friend, but turned out to be someone else. That, plus getting stuck with some of the guys really hammering it (I don't go 25+mph normally!) put me ahead of my group for a long time.

I was thinking about doing the 100k, but at the 50 mile route turnoff, I split since my left hip had be bugging me the whole morning.

The 50 route gets lonely for a bit, until the 100k people join back up. Rest stops were perfect and well-manned with TONS of volunteers and more food/fuel than you could ever need. Although supporting roughly 14,000 riders must be quite the undertaking.

Near the end, the 25 mile route joins up with us (50mile/100k) and we head through Sheppard AFB...this was my favorite part. You get to go down the flight line, where they have some of the planes pulled out for you and pilots standing by to wave, take pictures, etc....then you get this:

So much fun and I hope to get back there next year and do the 100.

here's my garmin route of the day:

Good stuff! I'm going to do that ride next year. How many total riders this year?

Good stuff. The 100 was great, until the turn to the east through Electra, then it got brutal. I bet you enjoy it next year.

Great video. My friend and I only did the 25 and there were only 2 other bikes riding through the cheering line at the time. I felt a little guilty - here they are cheering and yelling for me and all I'm doing is riding a measly 25 miles while they're the ones defending our country.

Thanks for sharing. I'd think it would be a ride I'd enjoy.

Glad you came out! I was there also with about 14,000 of my best friends :) I did the 100 mile route but wished that I had gotten to go through the AFB for the experience. It was a great ride with lots of support. There were some wrecks as there always are when you get that many cyclists together on one road I suppose. I am sure you weren't the only one that went too hard too fast as that is a usual problem at that particular ride and I think it makes for some of the wrecks due to fatigue. I was pleased to finish my first century but I missed my goal time by 9 minutes and 28 seconds... I finished in 5 hours 9 minutes and 28 seconds. I was on track until that brutal turn at Electra.

I did the 100 as well, finished in 7:06 or so, and felt good about that. Actually, it wasn't bad after Electra so much as it was good before that, with nice tailwinds to send us on our way.
