It's pretty scary to think that this bill is so obscure and buried that even diehard bikers haven't heard enough about it to respond to this thread. I had never even heard of it. I'm sure that that is the intent. There's no money to promote it with and no politician will ever vote for a bill that no one notices exists.

As Oxymoron said in another thread, the things we do everyday set off chain reactions. I would like to believe that as I ride my bike to work, I am proving to others that it is do-able. The more they see me cycling, the better an advertisement it is (especially when people who have known me can see the change in my health over the years!)
As for the tax benefit for people who leave their cars at home, I would take it if offered! And yet, I'll cycle anyway...

This cropped up last year, I think, on Bicycle Bob's old forum. It was well recieved at the time, and I for one would like to see something like this implemented in Australia. How long do these things generally take to get passed? How slow exactly do the wheels of beaurocracy (sp?) turn?

I get cheaper insurance on my car because I don't use it to commute, so that's something.

$65? Is that all? Kind of pales into insignificance when you consider the amount I save in fuel costs by riding my 47.5km commute everyday rather than driving it!

Likewise in California, where auto insurance rates are now [appropriately] heavily affected by annual distance traveled.
On top of that, my cars easily last 15-20 years, cutting the capitalization/amortization cost by at least 50 percent.
