Fifty Plus (50+) - Why do you start your message with "So"?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yes! Why do so many members begin their messages with "So"?
Or "Ok"? And "Ok, so..." really annoys me. Read the sentence without those words in front! It makes better sense without "Ok" and "So"
While I'm at it, why do some members write like they have a grade six education? My spelling isn't perfect, but at least I try. What happened to punctuation?
And what is with all the acronyms? LBS and IMHO, or preferably IMO, are pretty self evident, but I am at a loss to understand about half the acronyms used. Does using these cryptic abreviations mean you are smarter than me? Or does it make you a member in an elite group? Are there "Those Who Know!" and then, "there are the rest".
You are not communicating if you can't be understood.
That's my grumbling and complaining off my chest.
Sometimes it is good to vent.

So, is that it?
Anything else you'd like to share?
IMHO, you could use some TLC.

Vent as much as you like-and I understand your point.
But if you are going to get upset about the way someone writes on a posting- I wonder how you would feel if you could hear them talk? I speak with a South London Accent that in many eyes- or ears- is a "Common" accent. By common in this sense I mean Low education and mental capacity. The low Mental capacity may be there- but The education has been good.
Main thing here is that we enjoy cycling. We communicate by writing and some of us are not as articulate as we should be. If that means that someone uses poor grammar- makes spelling mistakes- or has to write in a manner that they are comfortable with- then I'm OK with that. At least we are communicating.
But the Acronyms- Most of here have an LBS- (Local Bike shop) and refer to it often enough to write LBS. Same when referring to Heart Rate. It is easier to write HR-MHR AVR etc.
So I can understand your point but most of us here are just cyclists. We may not have a grasp of the written or Spoken word as much as some of the better educated but The main thing is the cycling- Not the writing about it.

While the OP may be a bit finicky on this subject, I can relate some. I get ticked when I get an e-mail message from my over 30 child that writes in that text message style you know the one such as cul8tr or some crap like that. Its a natural extension of the texting society we are a part of. I also think in business a lot of acronyms spill out into daily use. Give the man a break or he might HTFU and KYA. :)

Given the conversational tone of the 50+ Forum, or at least the attempt at such, it would seem appropriate and desirable to start sentences in a less than "formal" way.

I'm with you on the "So..." it annoys the @ss off me every time I see it. Spelling and punctuation are lost causes--I was a magazine editor for years, and those aspects of communication are just gone. Schools don't stress them, people don't learn, and they don't care that they don't know. In the 16 years I had kids in public school, I don't think I ever got a handout from a teacher or administrator that didn't have some grammatical or punctuation error in it, and the level of writing on this site is pretty dismal.
As for the acronyms, though, you're flat wrong. Every job, sport or activity that I know of uses verbal shortcuts--S&L, IPO, ACL, rpm, IRA, mph. It's not cycling's job to communicate with you. If you want to participate, it's your job to learn the vernacular.

I would strongly recommend the original poster stay out of the 26 and the 178. The 41 and the 33 might not be much better.
I have noticed the 37 generally has above average member spelling skills. Nice polite folks, too.

I think it is a carryover from an increasingly common manner of speech. People being interviewed tend to start their sentences with "So..." in part to give them a chance to think about their response without appearing to delay. It ranks right up there with pseudo-pointing with a closed hand, which must be part of the teachings of every public-speaking consultant on the planet, it is so common. Hearing that "So... what I meant to say is..." so often, it is creeping not only into our everyday speech, but into our written words.
And just so I don't stay all serious: "So, does that, like, clear it up?"

Hhhmmm, Ok? Sooo yah, hmmmm nooo, well maybe hmmm no.
We are not writing term papers, and we do not need to be critiqued on our writing skills. If, it makes you feel intellectually superior... by all means feel free. But, personally I don''t care. "That's my grumbling and complaining off my chest. Sometimes it is good to vent." And, since you chose to be critical, your writing skills are not above reproach, and sentence fragments are not your friends...

So, a guy starts a thread for entertainment and everyone joins in. Wonderful! And does it with humor and vigor. Even more Wonderful!
So, now it is time for something serious ;) how about other words that bug people? Mine is the almost universal erroneous use of the word "decimate". It actually means to destroy or kill 10%, (deci...). But it is now used to mean total destruction.
What bugs y'all?

"Very unique" or "Quite unique". Unique is an absolute and something either is, or is not unique. It can't be qualified.

See : http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/decimate.html
And get the book, "Common Errors in English Usage". Looks like fun.
My biggest complaint (at least in the 50+ Forum), is the words and phrases that people use to "oldenize" themselves. This place is like the Cracker Barrel of internet forums. Whenever I start reading a thread about an "old fart" going for a ride with their "bride" and their "geezer" friends, I log out.

I used to rant a lot about that, but my ranting got old.
So . . . I just ignore it any more - it will eventually " . . . just fade away."
