Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Aeromax Wheelset

Hello!

I am looking for a new wheelset for my singlespeed. I want red rims, with machined sidewall for braking. I am looking to keep the cost below $200.

I have found these but was not sure if they are just garbage. I am not a hardcore cyclist that needs the top of the line equipment, just a wheel that will spin and not fall apart. I only ride it like 5 to 10 miles at a time, no long distances.

The wheels you posted are for a geared bike. This is not an insult, but with as little of bike knowledge you have you should go to a shop for help, rather than trying it on your own.

Can you explain why these would not work for a singlespeed?

It has a cassette hub rather than a flip flop hub.

It would work as a singlespeed hub but you would need to use one of those conversion kit with spacers and one cog, also the hub is spaced at 130mm, which probably won't fit whatever frame you are using.

That is similar to the hubs on the wheel you posted, the ratchet system that makes a freewheel work is in the hub with this design, and the multigeared cassette slides onto the groves(called splines). Like this

What you need is the older style thread on freewheel hub that has the ratchet system in the add on freewheel. The hub you are looking for will look like this. http://www.jensonusa.com/product/hu/HU308E03BLK__32___120.jpg specifically the right side threading. The left side is for a fixed cog and lock ring, but you can thread a freewheel onto that style just fine.

Oh ok, thank you for that explanation! My friend just but a wheel set like that and he used a casette converted for the freewheel. Mine would definitely work better with the other hub you posted.

I am assuming those are 700c and fit a 23c tire? I have a 1970s Schwinn Le Tour and a Claws singlespeed freewheel. Those should work just fine for those DP18s right?

The issue you will have is the breaks are going to be too short. Your Le Tour came with 27" wheels, and when putting on the 700c wheels your brakes wont reach to grab the sidewalls. If your set on buying new wheels the easiest thing to do would be to get longer reach brakes.

Yeah, my brakes are adjustable and I already looked at how much I could lower them. They should work just fine for me. My friend's bike has the same brakes and his converted from a 27inch wheel to a 700c just fine.

Any particlar advantage of the Velocity over the Weinmann (or IRO wheel)? With the same hub, it looks like the difference is only in the wheel.

The velocities are a small bit lighter, and better looking. Not a big deal at all.

I highly recommend Velomine if you are going to buy wheels.

I ordered the DP18s and they were shipped out that same day (yesterday) and are scheduled to get here Thursday.

I would honestly keep 27" wheels on the Le Tour...it's not obsolete. I got a great wheelset for my Le Tour II (Weinmann LP18 around Origin8 track hubs) and I didn't have to mess up my geometry in doing so. It also looks better having 27" wheels on bikes meant for 27" wheels. Haha
