Picking a good route is important (http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/08/bicyclist-killed-in-dan-ryan-express-lane.html)...

yikes...
yeah... riding on a tight, no shouldered highway is pretty dumb.... who knows why he did it. It's sad, but it was a pretty dumb move on his part.

Police say he was struck by a black Lexus LX470. The SUV did not leave the scene following the crash, and police have not cited the driver in the incident, a state police dispatcher said.
When I first read these sentence, my first impression was that they were expecting the SUV to have left the scene :( Maybe it just me being sensitive, but I thought it was odd they would have mention that.

Yeah, that's the impression I got as well. This is sad, but stupidity often comes with the ultimate price...

I can't imagine how anybody would think it's a good idea to ride a bike on the freeway; the article says this happened at night, and doesn't mention whether the cyclist had lights, or was a ninja. Either way, the guy on the bike lost his life, the SUV driver will be affected until the end of his/hers, and really no good will come of this.
It's odd that one of the comments under the story basically says "same road same rights" when bikes aren't allowed on this freeway - for good reason, obviously!

From the picture it doesn't look like he was going against traffic.

Riding a bike on a fast avenue/boulevard without a designated bike lane is hairy enough for me. But on a freeway? You've got to be reckless, ballsy, or just dumb to do that. And from what the one lady said it didn't seem like he was using any reflectors or lights. It's a shame.

It is sad that they give that impression, but I've rarely heard stories of bicycle accidents that aren't hit and run...

I *wish* I could have a route to work and back that didn't involve riding on the expressways. Dunno what this guy was thinking. "Expressways" in Chicago are apparently just massive interstate connectors.
In NYS its illegal to ride a bike on highways and expressways, even on shoulders. Not to mention that it would be suicidal to ride few feet away from traffic moving at 80mph.
