I've never got what the big deal is with this guy. He is always touted as this great climber but he's really kinda like a Spanish Leipheimer that can't TT. Yeah he won the tour on one stage and against a limp field (no Contador, Chicken, or Vino).

Sastre is not a bad rider, he just isn't Grand Tour winning material except under perfect circumstances, but there's no shame in that.

Having won the Tour was great for Sastre, but gave lots of fuel for the haters out there. He was never a GC winner, just had good legs and good luck in 2008. Before and after that great tour he has ridden as a top tier climber and a decent GT finisher. Thats the kind of rider he has always been.

Exactly. And barring any major bad luck, he's consistently a top 10, often top 5 GC rider.

Boy, I wish everyone cracked like Sastre (even with 2008 TdF excluded). In current peloton, he's one of the riders with best GT record- podiumed in all 3 GTs, was super successful in doing Tour/Vuelta double, he's a good climber, he has mental strength, to some extent can defend himself in ITT. He's not, for example, Contador and that's what also his results show, but he also isn't less deserving/considerably more lucky than many other GT winners- and he might have been among them even without 2008 TdF win (assuming that Contador would have taken it, he and LL most likely wouldn't have ridden Vuelta and guess who was behind them? Surely it's speculation, but the whole Sastre not winning TdF is too.)
And his comeback in this Vuelta, even if it was small, was truly impressive. He's after 2 GTs this year, he had a tough start and it wasn't exactly his favourite type of climbs- yet he still went for it and did better than so many GC contenders. And it's not like he usually peaks in the first week anyway.
