I've been commuting for 2 months now and have a persistant problem. I leave very early in the morning after I eat breakfast and the trip to work is uphill. I can take the hill just fine, but in the morning after breakfast I get nauseated from the effort. I try to take it as slow as I can but it hasn't helped, a hill is a hill after all. I have to eat breakfast or I will be very hungry,and I try and give a half hour rest between eating and biking, but it hasn't helped. Any suggestions/ Has anyone else had this problem?

are you pregnant? i experience nausea during hard efforts. eating more (and better food) usually does the trick, although sometimes it's unavoidable. but this is pretty much during extereme efforts. this must be a monster hill you're working on!
When you exercise, blood floods the primary muscle groups being used so that lactic acid can be cleared from those muscles to the heart. By eating so close to exercising, you're drawing blood away from the digestive process, hence the nausea.
May I ask, what are you eating typically for breakfast? You might want to try a light meal of Powerbar size in order to get some quickly accessible carbs into you, followed by the rest of the meal later after your ride.

this is a real problem for me when I am touring. I'd like to eat a massive breakfast; but if I do I will pay a heavy price. So I try to find a compromise like oatmeal. Something filling, but not heavy like eggs.At home my breakfast is always a fruit shake. If you drink coffee, have a cup of tea, and then have your cup of joe when you get to work.
A solution that may not work for everyone... I've got IBS, and I've had tremendous success with soluble fiber supplements like Citrucel. If I have a dose before breakfast, my stomach stay MUCH calmer on my post-breakfast rides... IMO, definitely worth a try! I also gave up coffee, which I think has been helpful... Coffee is especially upsetting if consumed before food.
timhaan, don't jinx me like that! No, I'm not pregnant, though. Seriously, good advice. I will try the no coffee thing, although I won't like it. I'm very much addicted, its my vice. I ususally eat a home made muffin, yogurt and coffee. I make my muffins with wheat germ and whole flours, maybe too bulky? I'll try the fiber powder and see if that calms things down. This morning I walked part of the hill and it helped alot, just warmed up slower. I just got a blender but hadn't even thought about fruit shakes, great idea! Thanks
Best to eliminate the coffee and go to fat free bran muffins. Geo
