Commuting - attaching fenders to a bike without chainstay brace?

I'd love to pick up a Windsor Clockwork, but I'm stuck on the fact that it doesn't have a chainstay brace. I hate riding a bike without fenders, and this one doesn't have a brace...so how does one attach fenders to a bike without the brace?

You can just use a couple of zip ties looped around the chainstays. It's kinda ugly, and definitely a kludge, but it's about the best you can do.

Minoura used to make a clamp on water bottle mount that worked perfectly for this. Their new design looks like it would be harder to use. You put the clamp on the back of the seat tube and use it to hold the fender instead of a water bottle cage. Looks like the Zefal Gizmo Clamps (http://store.comcycle-usa.com/ProductInfo.aspx?id=5083888) would work.

What I was thinking was the same as the gizmo clamps above, but I was thinking a wine cork and zip tie (or hemp twine ;) )

Loop a zip tie around each chainstay, leaving them loose. Loop a ziptie between the two, leaving it loose.

Position them where you want them, and tighten them all, the ones on the fram first.

You now have a chainstay bridge to zip tie the fender to.

If you are nervous, double the zip ties as insurance.

Trim all the tag ends with a sidecutter.

I use these, hardware stores normally carry P-clamps in plastic which won't rust.

Make sure you have tough cable ties. Some are nice and soft, the sort used for bundling computer cables. You dont want those, get the hard plastic ones, they can deal with the rigors of cycling.

I used an old clamp that was for an old blinky light. It is plastic and it bolts on the seat tube and attaches to the same point as the stay normally would.

A band clamp to fit a U lock mount works too, they have a threaded nut as part of the scheme.

turn it backwards, and where the arc of the fender gets closest to the back of your seat tube

is where it goes, put a hole for the screw in the fender there..

it will be higher than the BB..

I used NOTHING. My PB Cascadians work fine since the front of the fender fits snugly between the chainstays of my Jamis Sputnik. I haven't had a problem.168197
