Bicycle Mechanics - Update: Ofmega sealed bearing headset - how to install it???

Well, it took a long time but I finally got it done - it didn't end up being too hard. First I put the fork in the freezer for a couple hours, heated the lower race a little bit and it was easy to tap the bearing into place. The upper part had access to the bearing race so I could press it in using the normal method.167988
Next the fork went back in the freezer, warmed up the head tube, and pressed the lower bearing in by using a spacer around the fork tube and pulling from the bottom of the fork tube.

Hi! I know this is an old thread, but any additional info to add? I have a NOS Ofmega CX headset (in Red) that I am interested in installling on a 1981 Bianchi Campione D'Italia that I am restoring (modding slightly). It came with a Campy GS headset, but I had this set that I thought would be great on this bike. Thanks in advance!

The Ofmega CX has a 40mm stack height, while the Campy Gran Sport is only 33mm. Unless you have ~7mm worth of washers installed with the Campy headset, chances are your steer tube is too short for the CX.

The Nuovo Record stack height is 39mm, so not much better. The Tange "Levin" is an decent, affordable unit with a 33mm stack, and there are others that would work as well:

That CX unit ought to fetch a decent price if you need funds.

All I have to add is, this headset has worked fine since I installed it. Regarding the height, I don't know what was originally on my bike, I just had the frame and fork, and the CX fit. Regarding installation, I don't know if the heat/cool process is really necessary, but doing it that way, everything went together quite easily without a lot of stress on the parts. (By heat, I just mean a towel with hot water, not a torch or anything like that). Good luck with your project!

Thanks all, the Gran Sport is 33.8 and the CX is 39mm , I have decided to keep looking for a Pista Super Record Headset, and have put the CX up on Ebay. Anyone interested in it, shoot me a fair price and I'll kill the auction. I really wanted to use it on the CDI, but it won't work.

Is there a problem with the Gran Sport headset that you feel warrants its replacement? If not, why not just keep the Gran Sport; it's a fine headset with no real functional difference from the Super Record Pista (and which is likely to cost you an arm and a leg).

the GS headset will be fine, just thought about doing something different.
