It is my wife's 10 year service anniversary today. She has come to abhor her workplace in the last two or three years, but continues to stick it out.

I think her company (she is technically a temp) will celebrate her dedication by giving her a hard time over a workman's comp claim. But who knows, really?

Does anyone have a suggestion what I can do to salvage her day?

Flowers and/or chocolates are not in the solution set. I was thinking of having this (http://www.candygram.com/details.php?item=5439)sent to the office (she can throw out the chocolate), but there is no way this could be accomplished today.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

This. You can splurge on a nice lunch for her and get it delivered.

Geeez, 10 years as a temp, it's no wonder there are so many workplace shooting sprees these days.

She's an angel, I agree, take her something for lunch so everyone there can she how special she is. A hot fudge sundae and some flowers???

Thanks for the replies, folks. Lunch is out, mostly because she doesn't get a lunch break (she works two back-to-back part time shifts). Half the idea behind the candy-gram was to have it delivered at work (and flower deliveries are prohibited due to fragrance).

So, I will take her out for wings and beer. And maybe a gelato from her favorite dessert spot...

Wings, beer, gelato and a mani / pedi if her nail place is open. My wife loves the mani / pedi and the massage table. Both work for her.

no motor?

How about some balloons delivered to work? Something along the lines of congratulations, we think you're wonderful etc....

And if that doesn't work, how about a huge collection of records (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?676949-Need-help-with-selling-a-bunch-of-records.)?

Surprise her with a lunch visit and take her to Paris for breakfast. Then help her find a better job when you get back. No company is worth wasting your time, health and sanity over.

You could pay some kid to drop off a note.

It went pretty well, she got the prime rib. She is going to be a bit more earnest in her job searching starting this weekend. :)

I'm curious, what sort of company is this, as in what industry do they work in and what's she do there? It sounds kind of Draconian.

I'm glad she's tough, and I don't want to detract from the fact that she deserves some kind of recognition (good advice above), but my long-term plans would definitely involve leaving them behind.

Both for her sake and because companies will never learn if all the good employees let them get away with it (back-to-back part time shifts sounds like a sneaky way around labor laws regarding working hours).

10 years as a temp? Regularly being assigned back to back "part time" shifts? This place sounds like total BS. For her anniversary, I'd try to convince her to quit presuming you can live off one income while she searches for awhile since the job market is miserable. She can do better than that.

She is pretty unhappy about her job for reasons I have not mentioned. She is OK with the double part-time shift thing (she had an opportunity to decline). But I am encouraging her to move on for the lack of recognition and, in my opinion, the poor departmental management. So it's a lot of little things that add up to a lot of stress. The workman's comp claim really punctuates a lot of underlying issues. I'm not willing to discuss details on this in the event I need to get serious with them.

The issues with fragrances are legitimate, in my opinion. This is not your everyday office building and odd fragrances would adversely impact their ability to do business.

Definitely get something delivered, it will make her feel special and noticed. The other women in the office will be jealous which is an added bonus. If you have decided on food somewhere then see if you can get a letter / invitation hand-delivered (FedEx, etc. does this). You can get a fruit flower basket sent (fruit and candy cut into the shape of flowers)... there are tons of ideas out there. Just check 1-800 flowers or any of those other kinds of sites.

Ten years as a temp sounds more than a bit difficult. I hope she does start looking for a new job at another company. Being kept as a temp for a decade means the company is taking advantage of her, especially if they set it up so she has to work back to back shifts without a lunch break. What a lousy way to treat staff.
