When on vacation in scenic and historic Nanty Glo, PA, a couple of weeks ago, I passed up on a challenge at the town's answer to fine dining, the Niner Diner:

http://www.nantyglo.com/niner_menu.htm

Tiny's Challenge

3 lb Angus Burger
5 lbs fries and drink
2 hours or less—$21.95

Eat it all and it's free

To her credit, JAGraham passed on tackling this contest as well. So did SayreKulp when I phoned him.

I can put away some food, but that sounds like a near impssible challenge. Even if I were looking for an eating challenge, I think I, too, would have to pass on that one. That's a heck of a challenge.

You were riding an awful lot around where I have some family in Western PA... Ligonier, Nanty Glo. My relatives are all around Blairsville. What route were you following? You got a CGOAB journal for the trip? I'm curious b/c I've toyed around with the idea of biking to my relatives sometime.

Dude! Even after the 3 Volcanoes 300k, and the Bellingham 400k, I don't think my combined 4 post-ride meals equalled that much food. That's just a sick amount of chow to try and put down in one sitting. Good on ya for passing it up.

It wasn't a bike tour, so it wouldn't go on CrazyGuy. Besides, I was banned by the owner for criticizing the site here on Bike Forums.

I did, and I'm going to start a thread/journal on the trip in the next day or so.

It was easy to do.

I asked about people who had taken the challenge. I was told a few people had been successful. Most of them were what some people call "competitive eaters" - AKA gluttons. One person was training for the Nathan's hot dog eating contest.

I can't think of a better challenge to pass up. Well, maybe just one: You could probably eat all that food, and have enough calories to power a bike across Antarctica, without supplies.

I think if I tried to eat that, I would get half way through, then my guts would protest rather strongly into a porcelain throne... I would suppose that most people who can pack it away are truck drivers that are twice my size..... Heck I get nauseated just thinking about it.....

5lbs of Beef, 20 slices of Cheese, 20 pieces of Bacon,
5lbs of Fries, 1 Half Sour Pickle & a Fountain Drink. $50.00

I didn't escape unscathed. I still camped three nights in Nanty Glo. :-(

Pfft, only 3lbs. My limited edition special event Mega Burger was bigger than that! It was even called obscene!

No facebook at work or else I would post a picture.

...bautieri's megaburger.jpg...

Thanks Neil!

No, I didn't eat it by myself, the patty alone was almost 6lbs, topped with 1lb of bacon and a half pound of various cheeses, LT&O were straight from the garden, the bun was a homemade onion bun whoes recipe typically produces 6-8 buns. It didn't rise very nicly this time :(

The Megaburger is reserved for family gatherings, special occasions, and turning Neil off to food in general.

Yes, the Megaburger was the biggest news in part of PA for a while.

As a dude that can "usually" pack away two XL pizzas easily, I often think about taking one of these challenges.. I just don'think the free meal would be worth feeling sick for a couple of days.:D

Is this sort of thing common in the States? We certainly don't see much of it over here - I don't anyway. What we do have is lots of cheap drink: BOGOF, half-price, house doubles at reduced rates, to tempt the kids into drinking - and therefore spending - far more than they should. So we tend to have a binge-drinking culture, which has its disgusting side. Binge-eating looks just as repulsive - though I guess eating three pounds of meat and five pounds of potatoes is unlikely to make you belligerent, at least.

Which reminds me of a professor I used to work with. He was an expert on heart disease and teetotal. I teased him once about avoiding alcohol when all the evidence showed that a glass of red wine a day was good for the heart. He said "yes, alcohol does seem to have some benefit. But you can get the same protective effect by eating oily fish - and I never heard of a man beating his wife after eating a mackerel".

I wouldn't call it "common" in the US, but it's well enough known that some eateries have such 'challenges' on the menu. A poster on this forum won such a contest, but he had to drive three hours to eat it.

American portion sizes have historically been larger than those in Europe - Dickens and Mrs. Trollope wrote about how large, and how badly prepared, meals were in this country.

Back when I was an undergrad, that's the type of thing I would have considered (around my college it was a burrito eating contest), but the amount you have to pay if you fail probably would have kept me away ($20 lasted me a long time back then as I was super tight with my money).

I ate that many burger patties, fired on the barbecue, one at a time over about a month.... Putting the burger to the side a moment (how the heck would you eat it even), just wondering how many bike miles you would get out of those fries. I'm thinking pretty much to Montreal..... and back.....
