Commuting - First month of commuting, love it!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Since I've been rudely adding my 2 cents in commuting threads here and there, a little intro is probably overdue.

After spending a month working my way up from not riding for years to the ride to the office, at the beginning of August I started commuting to work in Atlanta 2 days a week, about 9 miles each way. And this week is my first 3 day week. Plus I ride other times just for fun and sometimes to get groceries, etc. Total mileage for July, my first full month of riding, was 140.56. August, when I added in commuting, 270.54.

My company is pretty supportive or at least not being obstructive. I come right in through the parking garage and then roll my bike through the hall and park it behind my desk. The biggest hassle at the office was figuring out how to trip the gates to get back out of the parking garage. I've either figured it out or security watches for me every day and lets me out. The stories some of you tell about your employers being jerks makes me sad.

I'm riding a '95 Specialized Hard Rock with Continental Travel Contact tires, a rack, Basil panniers, a wire basket and a front & rear light. I still want fenders and a kick stand. Before I put the panniers on it was weighing in at 34 lbs. It/I'm not fast but it's pretty bombproof. And here it is:

Anyway, just thought I'd share a little bit about me since I'll be popping in here more often.

Nice looking commuter too.

Hope you stick with the commuting. Sounds like you have everything you need to keep doing it.

So proud of you! I'm only 2 weeks into it myself, but I can bet we'll both be commuting for quite a while. Just remember to be prepared, and enjoy yourself!

And I've said it before, but I love those panniers, too.

Thanks everybody! Yep, I'm an addict. I know I need an off day today from riding, but I still want to....
