I was thinking about riding from HB to the South Bay (Redondoish) mainly via PCH. How is PCH past Seal Beach? Is it safe to ride or should I abort?
Overall I'd say it's safe, but there are "safer" times of the day/days of the week than others. Pretty much every east/west route from LB Harbor area to the South Bay are truck routes, so I don't think the other roads will be any safer.

I'd recommend something along these lines if you don't mind some extra miles:

The section along Palos Verdes Dr South has some great ocean views.
If that is too many miles, you can always do Palos Verdes Dr North (from Long Beach, take Anaheim then turn left on Palos Verdes Dr North a little after crossing the 110). PV North is close to the distance of PCH, but a much better road.
And, the section between the 710 and the 110 will suck no matter which route.

I went from Redondo to Long Beach a few weeks ago, found a really good route. From Palos Verdes Dr N, I took Vermont Ave to Lomita Blvd to Wilmington Ave to Sepulveda Blvd (which becomes Willow St near the Terminal Island Freeway), then over to the Los Angeles River, then down to Long Beach. Pretty easy, wide shoulders (most disallow parking too) and lighter traffic. Not scenic, but not bad.

For the 710 to 110 section.
I am fan of Willow/Sepulveda .
Anaheim is good early on a weekend morning. Weekday morning and you will be passed my many big rigs.
I don't like PCH at all. Many spots are 3 lanes with some parked cars, but overall a little too busy for me.

Ok, just did Anaheim again this morning (commuting to work in El Segundo). While I don't find it particularly unsafe, it is still ugly and unpleasant with a fair amount of debris on the shoulder. I may try out Willow/Sepulveda next time...however, what is the best way to get back to the coast (below Redondo Beach) or Palos Verdes Dr North using this route?
Edit: Forgot about sd_mike's suggestion. I'll try that one next. Other options are welcome of course.
