I've had years of back problems, but lately, it's been good. I've learned not to use my back to hold up my weight when I lean over. I rest my weight on my arms. this requires that you do your push ups! :)

abdominal work and back extensions. i have spasms in my lower back/flexors on occasion, ranging from mild to severe. stretching and strengthening works best for me.

Prevention and strengthening you mid-section is the best medicine.
Here's a basic one to do every day:

Lay flat on the floor on your stomach, with your arms and hands set like you are going to do pushups. Then push up your torso, stretching your back by trying to leave your hips on the ground. Do ten of these easy....take a break. Then do ten more and try this twist:

When you arch up, exhale while holding up there and you will feel your spine drop a bit more even. The more you do these the better flex, the less chance of lower back problems.

Back extensions on the back extension machine at the gym.

Works great for me.

Had really bad spasms ones. I could hardly walk. From my MD: spasms are caused by pain. Pain causes more spasms. It goes in a vicious circle. He recommended muscle relaxers (i.e. ibuprofen). It worked great.

I have had trouble for years. First thing I have done is lose some weight. About 30# to be exact. That in itself helped alot. But, it did not fix the joint soreness built up over the years.

So, I went to my friends house, and he has one of those inversion tables. I tried it for about 20 minutes, and man, what a differance. It really stretches and straightens everything out. Great for joints.
I think I will be getting one of my own.

For muscle soreness, I take two shots of Makers Mark Whiskey on the rocks. Then, I lie on my stomach while my gorgeous wife massages my back.

God, I love that woman!!!!! :D

i've tried one of those shock-pulse gizmos with the dielectric grease and electrical pads... feels good for a bit, but just made my spasms worse.

In the long run you need a stronger back (and tummy). Try this, warm the area up before you start. Use a warm bath or a heating pad, then stretch a little. You can stretch in the tub, slide down a bit and pull your knees to your chest. This works really well for me. There isn't much weight on my back; and it's perfectly flat, warm and stretched. Start gently when you ride. A slow warm up can cure many problems. Use a NSAID like Alleve either before or after the ride. My Doc says before, I say after, take your pick
