Bicycle Mechanics - JoeBlow Sport Floor Pump - What is this attached to it?

I live in Japan and bought a JoeBlow Sport 2 pump.

There is a tool attached to the smarthead and I cant figure out what its purpose is. Does anyone know?

This is a guess but i think it's an adapter to let you use the Presta valve pump head on Schrader valves, sort of the reverse on the more common adapters. The "closepin" clamp is just to keep the adapter available and attached to the hose.

I'm pretty sure it's not an adapter holder; one could just be moulded into the pump head. However, I don't have a clear idea what it might be... only that I might suddenly realise its purpose given more, larger, clearer pics.

Seems to me it's to do some common pinching task while changing a tyre, only I can't think what exactly.

FWIW, that's a different pump head than I've seen on the Joe Blow. The one's I've seen are double sided - presta on one and schrader on the other. From the small pictures I can't tell what that is supposed to be on your pump. Did the shop/seller not know?

The JoeBlows in Japan do not have dual heads, they have the smarthead which is advertised as one that can fit both schearder and presta valves

There was a language barrier at the LBS; I'm US military that just got stationed in Japan

The text on that tag does say it is a valve adapter. If you could take another shot of the smaller print right above the picture, I'll post a translation of the directions for you. But it's a little blurry on my screen to see the kanji.

I was going to suggest that since it is attached to the pump head that it's must be a valve type adapter. The last picture with the "spring clamp" bit fitting into the nozzle pretty much clinches that this is what it is. Which way it adapts should become pretty obvious and you try it on your first stem.

Thats odd because I used the pump on my road and my MTB (presta and schrader respectively) without any problems. The chuck was able to pump both of them up. Is this for a different type of valve?

I think that might be a woods valve adapter. The woods valve, though rarely seen in the USA is fairly common in Japan, and won't fit directly into the smarthead.

Yep! The tag says it's the adapter for the British type valve (aka, the dunlop or woods valve) and you just put it into the smart head and pull the lever up to lock it in place. You'll probably never need it unless you meet a Japanese girl riding one of those city bikes that happens to have that type of a valve on it. The clip thing helps hold the pump head to the tube valve while you are pumping it.

FWIW, they call the schrader valve U.S. or American valve, presta valves are called French valves, and then the dunlop/woods is called British type valve in Japan.
