Older - 80's' Murray Monterrey cruiser with a coaster brake.

Feels like crap when you try to ride it, so I poked around and I noticed the rear wheel has side to side movement when I push it with my thumbs.

I'm a rider, not a wrencher, so I come here to ask for guidance. I was looking for an answer with the search function, but all I found was a vague reference to 'adjusting cones'....

Yep, its a cone adjustment. Visit the park tool site, they go through cone adjustments thoroughly. Given the age of the bike, you also should replace bearings and grease.

You will need special cone wrenches to do this job. If you are not comfortable doing it, just pay a shop to do it, it should be an inexpensive fix. And if you are paying them, I would have the front wheel done as well. Bike is of an age where such routine maintenance is warranted.

Thanks much.
Special wrenches and grease = it's going to the shop.
