1) once you get past $3000 your really not going to see uch of a difference, unless your very very strong. so i would say get what every you want, then buy aero wheels. and no one will care if you cant back it up your doing an ironman, your a man. enough said.
2) this can get really really expensive

if i were you i would go with a 2k or under tt bike, then get a set of aero wheels, or just get aero wheels and use them on your trek.
I'd second the thought of looking around ~3k. It gets said tons of times on bf, but you should then focus on fit and feel. Get out and try riding a couple of the different bikes you are interested in.
In the 3k and up range all the components are going to be fine. Unless you are super picky (which you aren't otherwise you wouldn't be asking here) you'll be very happy with what you get in that range as long as it fits.

1. The nice part about tri bikes, is that a while ago, a few of companies made very nice bikes in the $2500ish range, that caused other companies to compete there at that price range so that's where bang for the buck is. Put on some aero wheels, and you have a bike that is good enough that you will not need to worry about upgrading until it breaks.
2. I really wish this was true, but no, bike companies buy components in bulk and they are able to offer the groups for much less than even a used set on ebay.
3. depends on the person, if you want to spend about 4 grand to drop 5-10 minutes in an IM, then go for it. also the ride for the long distance will be more comfortable
two other things: 1. it's aero bars not arrow bars.
2. you said you are 18, so I would seriously reconsider attempting a full IM. I am 18 too, and I have friends who have completed Ironmans, and have had to go through months of recovery due to stress fratures and many other problems, even though they were properly trained. There is a reason they set the age limit at 18, but just because you are at the age limit does not mean it isn't bad for you. If you are set on it, do not try to get a decent time, just focus on midnight, have the swim and the bike go as fast as you want, and take the marathon very slowly. I would recommend waiting for a while though. Also, if you are going to be in college leading up to may 2011, you will find you will not have enough time to properly train for an Ironman. One of my friends did this, and did not really end up training.
