Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I told my wife about the 9/18 Pie ride and she said it sounded good, where was the ride and who was going. I'm not sure she understood my reply.
In any event, today we went over to the beach and road our tandem up A1A along the coast. We got a bit of a late start, so it was getting a bit warm. We rode 11 miles up to Atlantic Ave in Delrey Beach and stopped for refreshments (banana, granola bar, and drinks.)
After a suitable rest, we headed back down to Hillsboro Blvd in Deerfield Beach.
Riding was comfortable but stopping for the red lights was HOT. It was good to get going again.
We got back to the car, and headed back home. We didn't have pie on this run. We have 3/4 of an apple pie at home. We'll complete the practice by each having a nice big piece after dinner.
We will be doing a similar ride on the tandem, but 22 mi longer next week as part of a 9/11 Memorial ride. We may come back on 9/18 for the actual pie ride, or pick another spot on the coast. Weather will dictate.

That elevation profile is a real killer... don't know how you managed it:D
Well done on the practice run. Practice makes perfect!

It was tough, but we managed! Built up quite an appetite as well.
We practiced the PIE tonight after dinner. I think we did real well. Hot Dutch Apple pie with caramel, and ice cream with caramel swirl. We blasted thru that pretty fast!

To show my dedication, I went all the way to Minnesota to train recently. We rode our bikes too!

I did 80 miles on Wednesday for my birthday, and logged a whopping 330 feet of climbing - a breathtaking almost 5 feet per mile. The east coast of FL is a rather flat place. Part of the reason we worry about hurricanes and a rising sea level.

Bob, I admire your commitment to this challenge. You could probably find a traditional apple pie with a top crust that has higher elevation than that stretch of road!

THAT is my life's dream!
On a serious note, we must all be fully dedicated to this all important challenge. You just can't train hard enough for it.

Problem is that the ride is getting close and you are only training at half throttle. Getting the bikes out of the shed is an achievement for some of us- Riding the Prerequisite milage is hard but it would appear that you have masterd this
BUT if you don't start on the PIE shortly- you are ging to be in trouble. Remember- the PIE should be eaten whilst on the ride and it is that combining the two- the ride and the Pie- that is the difficult part.
So well done on the riding part of this event- but you will have to hunt out a Pie shop shortly- other wise you are going to Fail :eek:

I'm surprised he doesn't have a basket on the tandem to stop and pick some fruit (usually can find some mangos, coconuts or limes in South Florida, unfortunately apples don't grow down here, but a lot of crabapples retire here :p

I must redouble my efforts. On tonight's ride I will endeavor to do better. Problem is the "pie" stop is at Starbucks. Not the best place to fine pie. I will subsitute a fruit filled tart, with your permission.
And Garilia is right. Esp about the crab-apples!

With or without permission? As an act of moral depravity, or just for grins?

A) As a tribute to the can cyclists pick fruit thread.
B As an act of moral depravity
C) Just for grins
D) For his wife, the same way Eve convinced Adam to take a bite, and to burnish his image in her eyes as her Tandem Desperado!
E) All of the Above

Well, the planned ride got scrapped. Rained out. However, I did my part and trained as best I could under adverse conditions: Hot apple pie with ice cream.

Stopping at a nearby pie shop would apparently require climbing an overpass. I say "suck it up" and climb for pie;)

Have to admit that I have only gone to "Starbucks" once- Never again so it looks like you may have to have a backup plan. Get the basket fitted on the tandem and take a home made pie with you-

This is somewhere between Zion and Bryce national parks
