Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Frame Upgrade!

Hi i know theres lots of posts on mercier kilo tts but i cant seem to find the right info. I have had a mercier kilo tt for 1 year now and i am looking forward to upgrading it to a better frame such as a Fuji track pro, bianchi concept, cinelli vigorelli, etc... I have upgraded many parts on my mercier already such as the wheelset, pedals and straps, saddle, bars, but i still have the stock (truvativ touro) cranks. I am looking to have a bike that will accelerate faster and be more responsive on the street.
So 1) Should i get a better frame and will it make a big difference in my ride?
2) If not, should i just upgrade my truvativ touro cranks to better cranks (omniums, sram courier s300 or sugino 75s)?

You're most likely going to get a lot of people chiming in telling you that your cranks suck but I've had a set of Touros for well over a year now (on three different frames), have had zero problems with them and am actually quite fond of them.

If you're no longer happy with your Kilo and are dreaming of a new aluminum frame, getting new cranks isn't going to make you like it any better. If it were me, I'd spring for the frame and eventually end up getting another crankset down the line.

You will need to buy lots of stuff - the frames listed above have 27.2, integrated, 31.6, whatever - not 26.8. The steerer tube on the kilo is 1", not 1 1/8". And so on.

so do you think theres a big difference between an aluminum frame and my mercier steel frame on the street in terms of performance? because right now im not sure if i should save up to build up a new aluminum bike or upgrade the remaining stock parts on my mercier. thanks

Aluminum is a much more harsh ride on the street, as aluminum doesn't do much to dampen any sort of road vibration. Besides...steel is real, dude.

I have a soma rush as well, and it's a great, fun ride - admittedly, it's a bit like the kilo at a much higher cost. The kilo is a great frame and if you like it, you should keep it. There is no need to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. When you have the full budget for an aluminum track bike test it out at the LBS. The Trek T1 is a nice light bike that many recommend and can give you a good feel for aluminum without the FTP/Concept price.

keep your tt. i've had mine for three years and i just put 70 miles on it today in the rain. i love it. i don't see why anyone would want to upgrade if they're not competing. just ride.

hey thanks for the posts. I decided to take your advice and keep the frame but i was wondering if i should upgrade the stock kilo tt cranks into Sram courier s300s. Im guessing the srams would be much more stiffer and lighter but i was wondering if it is worth the upgrade. thanks!

I don't think it's worth it but if you think you want to upgrade then go ahead.

I'd keep the stock cranks until they need to be replaced.

SRAM Omniums for $160 at Bike Island. Also you could upgrade your headset, your seatpost, if you want.
