Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Has anyone made a 31.8 track drop?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Ha! I got you in here to lambaste me. But I'm asking a serious question.

Has any company made a prototype track drop where the 31.8 diameter continues for the entire length of the tubing? I have really big hands and would love a fat handlebar at the grip. Bar plugs would be custom as well.

Think anyone would be interested in making a custom set of bars? Are there any small manufacturers out there that do custom bars?

I think 31.8 all around would be weird. I too have big hands and I feel like normal bars + typical thick cork tape is too much, but that's just me.

If nothing comes up then you can just wrap your bars with old tubes until you have the desired bar thickness

I've thought about a double wrap. It's new bike fever too. I have a new ride that I'll be putting together this week and I'd like something different on it.

There is a custom builder in town and a few component manufacturers. I might make some calls, see if anyone would make something for me.

Race Face maybe?
They might make the custom bar for you but you might blow a ton of money away if you end up not liking the bar.

Yeah, they are just down the street and Blackspire is a 9 minute drive away on Annacis. Neither of them make a track bar but I'd be willing to try a 31.8 bullhorn too.

My XXXL digits would be happy.

how long are your fingers?

Dr. Banzai
09-07-10, 08:39 AM
Long enough that every pair of gloves I have ever owned my fingers bottom out. Middle finger, center of knuckle to tip is 5 inches.

Deda makes both track drops and bullhorns in 31.8. They are 31.8 where they connect to the stem and taper off. I switch between both on my bike and I love them.

31.8 all the way, not stem

uh oh, I made a mistake on the internet and it took you less than a minute to correct me. You win the prize ******bag.

and btw, even though they taper off they are still wider around than any other drops I've used. The horns have a sort of aero section on the flats that is very wide around.

Dr. Banzai

Not wide enough. Hence the question.

YOU'RE A FREAK!! Mine is only about 4.5 inches

deda is releasing a 35mm bar.

Dr. Banzai
09-07-10, 11:29 AM
Well that Deda bar does use half the bar for the 35mm diameter. And I do like ergo drops. Hmmm.

I was thinking sabre tooth handlebars. I think elephant bars works better.

I'm sure the price for carbon bars like that along with a new stem would just make me double wrap my bars.

rustybrown
09-07-10, 11:45 AM
Yeah, that price tag is probably as big as the bar diameter. Still, kind of surprised Deda didn't just integrate the setup like a lot of the carbon aero-wing bars.

I'm about 4.75.

I would consider 31.8 bars.

Dr. Banzai

I emailed Blackspire this morning. I'd get them to copy my deda pista bars but with 31.8. They might laugh at me but I'd be willing to pay a decent price for some one off bars that fit my hands without being 7mm of mushy foam.

adriano

try grips.

FastJake

without being 7mm of mushy foam.

Wouldn't all that mushy foam be nice and comfortable though? I'd just double wrap with cork bar tape.

Dr. Banzai

try grips.

Yeah some Oury grips on my track drops would look really slick. :twitchy:

Double wrap would be comfortable. It's the easy solution. Not the preferred solution. Yes, I know I am being difficult.

Did you talk to any of them about custom fab costs? I'd like to get some 49cm road bars made to fit my ginormously wide shoulders. I'd be interested if you have any further info from them.

They don't look ergo though, do they? More classic, "pro" to my eyes.

Dr. Banzai
09-07-10, 02:59 PM
They don't look ergo at all. But I like my ergo drops on my T1 right now so to "like" these would not be a stretch.

im referring to track grips.

Dr. Banzai

Still not thick enough. Oury grips just barely cut it.

I was just thinking about this the other day and am surprised it isn't one more thing for us to size on bikes. I want bigger bars.

That's all

KtownDougie
09-08-10, 07:10 PM
What about laminating the bars with resin? You would either have to do thin layers or make a mold to lay the bars in. No squishy, just smooth, tough plastic.

Dr. Banzai
09-08-10, 08:07 PM
I was quoted $5000 and up to prototype the bars from Blackspire. Seriously, a $600 tube bender and a $180 1.25" mandrel and I could be in the handlebar business in no time. $5000 seems to be a number that says "go away".

I'm seriously considering making a couple bars up. 6 bends, heat treat them and drop them off at the local anodiser. I have space in my shop for this. The demand may not be there but it would be worth it to try. I'm quite sure I can get another guy I know to make a run of bars as well, might email him too.

their email:

"The cost of prototyping something like that would be in the vicinity of $5000+ It would require new tooling that is radically different than what the industry is using to produce drop bars. It is just not as simple as using a bigger tube unfortunately."

I'm no rookie when it comes to metalworking and this response got an actual LOL from me.

Seems like that some members would be interested if you start making bars.
