So, the BB on my Big Dummy seems to have some movement. There is a definite up/down click when I tug on the ends. This means new bearings yes? Fairly familiar with square taper, but have yet to mess around with external bearing types. If i was reading correctly, FSA type bearings fit?

Also, it only has about 2,000 miles on it, this seems poor to me, is it typical of external types?

Can anyone point me at a fairly decent replacement set, focus on durability and weatherproofing rather than last ounce of performance.

Phil Wood makes an external bearing set..

Seems to me its a place where the licensing of WTB's grease guard
lubrication purging, flow thru channeling would be advantageous ..
If their patents are still applicable..

You might want to skim through the installation instructions to make sure that the bearings are sufficiently preloaded and that everything is torqued properly, new cranksets sometimes need adjustment shortly after install, especially if the preload wasn't set just right the first time, or something wasn't fully torqued: http://www.surlybikes.com/files/SurlyCrankInstructions.pdf

If it is the bearings, then you should be able to use any of the standard Shimano, FSA or Raceface style outboard bearings. Enduro Bearings (a brand) are a popular replacement: http://www.enduroforkseals.com/id227.html
