This is essentially a trendy version of those foldable camping bowls and cups.

I don't see the reason to have a folding basket on your bike though; you might as well leave it there . . .

Its a neat design but all in all its nothing new or really marketable. Racks really dont pose a problem when they are there. Usually you put them on there to have it there anyways.
Unless there is a price quote that I cannot find at this time(correct me if I'm wrong), but why not just go with a back or front bike rack and a basket for said rack? Seems like it would be easy for items to fall through the large spaces of these concepts. I guess there are solutions to that though(nets).

"The bike baskets ship flat and are made of laser cut powder coated steel "
It just ships flat. It's not meant to fold/unfold as needed.
I think it's a great idea and looks way cooler than most baskets. Granted, small items would fall right out the side - but I get the impression that most of the target market for these would be putting a purse in there.
Definately easier and cheaper to ship than a normal basket. It's the Ikea mentality of flat packing your product to save money on expensive warehousing/shipping. These savings can then be passed on to the consumer - or added to the profit margin, depending on the market.

Don't know where you see that. Price is for one near as I can tell.
Besides, even half price would be pretty steep for a colorful steel sheet.
