Classic & Vintage - Info on Alan Road Bike?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've been trying to find some more information on this Alan carbon road bike which has Suntour Superb Pro components for $495. Is the sellers asking price about right or a little high? And does anyone have this bike or similar one, that knows any info? http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/bik/1944771803.html

I don't think my ALAN is carbon fiber but it looks very much like yours. I built mine up form a bare frame, installing Shimano 600 Arabesque on it. Sadly, I don't know all that much about your bike but if it rides like mine, you will love it.

it looks clean but for a 20+ year old bonded carbon frame $500 may be a bit high. it already needs brake hoods and those are not cheap for Superbee
is cloes to you? I would never buy a bonded frame sight unseen be sure to check the joints real close for signs of fretting and cracks
is it me or are those track bars? (or maybe crit bars?)
It's been on CL for a while. Have you called the guy yet? I'd offer him $300 and see what he says.
It looks like a nice bike, but judging from the pics, there is a possibility that the Suntour Superbe components could be a bit worn or beat up already so I think $500 could be a liitle steep. The percieved market value on these very early carbon bikes are also lower than a high end steel frame as these still carry a sort of stigma regarding frame joint reliability (although I think it's mostly overblown/untrue). It still could be an OK buy at $500 if the components will adjust and clean up to almost new, so it will be good to find out more about it from the seller.
I bought a similar bike at eBay last year, An 85 Vitus Carbone Plus 7, with full DA7400 group on it and I paid just a little over $400 for it. I concluded later that even with the bike's almost perfect frame/finish, the worn out DA compnents made it that I overpaid for the bike. It was sort of lessons learned for me as the components sure look almost new in the pics provided by the seller, but all the worn stuff only came in to better view when I got the bike. Didn't fuss about it too much in the end cause I refitted the bike with a full French group and I was happy in the end.
BTW, I might actually be considering an ALAN carbon build project in the future, but all my French English threaded "junk" will not work with the ALAN frames (Italian Threading).

Looks like a similar bend to my Mavic "crit" bars....
There is room for negotiation, it's NOT full Superbe Pro. The hubs are Shimano 600, the pedals are early Look-style Shimano (Dura Ace? I remember they weren't marketed as part of any groups). Superbe Pro hubs are highly prized, as are the Superbe Pro quill or track pedals. The 'circle isn't complete.
It has collector's value, if you like the bike, do inspect it carefully for the issues mentioned already. If the bike is in prestine condition, seller could demand higher price.
[BG] those look like criterium bars.

Ahem! ALAN's are aluminum, not "carbon" (graphite fiber composite).

+1 .. Closely inspect the aluminum lugs for cracks . they always sold as frame and fork so all the other pares are previous owners choices .
AlAns are a screwed together set of tubes [rh/lh thread, tapered like a plumbers pipe] into threaded lugs .. with adhesive.
Vitus are a tube sleeved over an internal lug..
Mike's off base on that .. AlAn had a 3 carbon main tube model, they also had models with colored anodized tubes,

Cool, good info. I'd never seen nor heard of one before.

I too have an ALAN and I love it. It is an aluminium tubed version unlike the one you are interested in. Recently I had to sell off half my bike collection - out went Bianchi's, Merckx, Benotto, Colnago, etc, but I kept my ALAN - it rides very nicely.
I always look for Carbon framed ALAN's - I would like to have one some day to go with my ALAN.
I also have a Colnago with Superb Pro, it's great stuff considering its vintage.
