ok, so there are the salmon koolstop road (or bmx) pads that make a huge difference in braking power. But what's that company that's been making brake pads with the same or similar compound, been doing it for a long time now, and the mounting for the pad looks like cheap crap, but really isn't? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Scott-Mathauser brake shoes used the same salmon colored compound. IIRC, they made a cheap shoe that looked cheap but was perfectly functional, and a expensive shoe that had cosmetic "cooling fins".

yeah that's it, scott-mathauser. Are these still available? A friend of mine uses them (and swears by them) and said there were cheaper than the koolstops.

The Scott/Mathauser pads could be considered the forerunner of the Kool-Stop "salmon" pads. Kool-Stop actually manufactured the Scott/Mathauser pads under contract and although the compound was superior to anything else, the design specified by Scott/Mathauser included some very primitive holders. When Scott/Mathauser ceased to exist, Kool-Stop just re-incarnated the compund using their own holders. Even thought they're a little more expensive, I'd stick with Kool-Stop. Get the cartridge holders if you can and just replace the cartridge inserts as the pads wear. I myself prefer the black/salmon dual-compound pads because they reduce squeal.

I didn't know you could get cartridge salmon pads.... are you talking about for road brakes?

Both.

Kool-Stop holder with cartridge for V-brakes. These cartridges should fit Avid and Shimano holders too.
